I'm trying to convince my Father in law (in a nice way) to move to the Senior Tees for good. He's 67 years old and only drives the ball 180-200 yards. It's funny because there are a couple holes at our home course that he has to hit from the senior tees anyways because he can't make the carry from the whites. I just think the game would be so much more fun for him if he would move up.
Part of the problem is he plays in a senior league and they all hit from the whites so there's a lot of social aspects to not being the one to stick out in a crowd. I don't care if he still plays from the whites with his league, I just want him to move up when he plays with my son and I.

Any Suggestions?

How old is your son, and what tees does he play from? And which tees do you play? Suggest that the three of you, one day, play from the forward-most men's rated tees to see how low you can go. It won't likely affect your handicap much, if at all, and I think he'll like the lower scores from those tees. Then you and your son can move back in a future round.

I suggest that if you want him to do it, then you do it too when you play with him. Leave your driver in the car and just play the shorter course for fun with him. I played yesterday with our head pro and his father, and we all played the white tees (no "senior" tees on the course). Had Jeff and I been playing without his dad along we'd have probably played the back tees, but it's just more companionable to all play the same tee when there is nothing on the line anyway. Makes the course look different, and definitely some different club decisions on the tee.

You guy's have some great ideas and I think where I need to go is getting my Father in law and my son on the same tees this coming season. My son is 11 and played from the reds last year which are the tees all Regional Junior tournaments are held on here until age 13. I've told my son that the sooner he starts moving back the easier it will be in his tournaments and he's gained about 20 yards this off season(they grow fast at that age). So at this point they are both driving it about the same yardage. Makes sense they both hit from the same tees.

As far as his Driver loft I think it's a 10.5* and he carries a million hybrids(lol). But the bottom line is he just started playing when he was 65 and due to some prior injuries he just can't get his body or arms in the right position to make a good golf swing.

We have a Mrytle Beach golf trip coming up in Feburary during my sons winter break and I'll try to get them playing from the senior tees then.

Thanks Guy's!

I say let him play from the tees he wants to play from. If he doesnt want to play from the senior tees, just let it go.
In the end, its really not worth the arguement.

My club has a 2 part rule for playing the senior tees:
1) Minimum age of 70
2) Combination of age + handicap must equal a minimum of 85.

This stupid game we play is all about fun anyway. Lately, I've been playing from the Men's Forward (White) Tees, which are usually somewhere around 6000 yards. I like a little longer, but the guys I play with struggle from longer, so I moved up and since players in foursome always seem to want to play where other guys are playing, they have started to play from there and are playing better and thus having more fun. For me, I just hit more 3w and 2h off tee than normal and it's also fun for me. I really think the father-in-law would have more fun playing up because it's simply less work and frustration. I have seen courses that have signs up that indicate tees are not 'Pro, Men's forward, senior and women', but are based on handicap instead. This takes a little bit of ego out of it. I heard Stina Sternberg (from The Golf Channel and Golf for Women Magazine) one time say that to figure out what tees a player should use, you should simply multiply the distance you hit your 5 iron/25* club by 36 (for me that's 6480 yards).

Occassionally I'll be paired up with people who should be playing the senior tees. I've never commented to them about it, but if it was someone I knew or was close to I wouldn't hesitate to give them my opinion. If they still continued to want to play a particular tee that's there business. As to the OP's FIL he does have a valid reson for sticking with the "men's" tees since the league he plays in plays from those tees. He probably considers every time he plays an oportunity for practice and to play from shorter tees would be counter productive to that end. I like the idea of tees being rated based on handicap instead of sex and age. There is a lot of ego attatched to what tees people play and someone who can't break 100 probably shouldn't be playing from tees that are near the course's maximum yardage. I also like playing at courses that have a lot of tees set up for all skill levels. I played an enjoyable round at a course on Jekyll Island that had 7 or 8 tees. The shortest were no longer than 150yds on the longest par 5's. The starter recommended that course (they have 4) since I had my young sons playing with me, and they had a great time playing on a course that fit their capabilities.

At my home course money takes precedence over ego it seems.

In all tournaments we have to play from the tees in which our handicap has been established (the tees you post 75% or more of your rounds from)

I have never in my life seen so many men play the gold tees (our course is red, gold, white, blue)

Maybe you could play a quick practice round with him from the Senior Tees. Now, obviously you'd light up the scorecard. But maybe he'll do better thus having more fun and deciding to stick with it. Just a thought (not a really good one).

We have the same thing. These guys will tease each other about wearing skirts and such. However, when a tournament comes around, they are the first to try and get to the golds.

Our golf association had to implement policies stating that you couldnt' switch back and forth. Minimum 60 years old AND a handicap of 18 or higher. We use USGA rule 3-5 to allow them to compete in regular blitzes. As to the original subject of the post, ego is a big part of it. We have folks that won't go to the golds. We even have one 80 year old, 38 handicap fella that won't go to the reds despite the inability to carry one water hazard from a yellow tee.

How does Rule 3-5 apply to this topic... I can't seem to see where it comes in to a blitz. Of course I don't know what a blitz is either.

All 3-5 says is
The penalty for a breach of a Rule in stroke play is two strokes except when otherwise provided.
