Oops, except for one thing. If they're going to provide vouchers for rounds of golf, I'm all in!

Yes, we need all of this. NOT!

Thanks for posting it. It's too bad they weren't concerned with this sort of thing the last eight years.

Another broken promise....

Congress received the bill (1100 pages) at 11 last night and was passed early this afternoon. Why? Because Nancy Pelosi has to go to Europe? And I am sure there are >550 pages worth of other reasons...

It's estimated that it would have taken one reading (and comprehending) this bill at 640+ words per minute to have it read in time to vote on it. And that's without a piss break. So that means no coffee....
I wonder if the MicroMachine guy could have done this....?

While I don't doubt that Nancy Pelosi is trying to pull one over, reading a bill isn't like reading

War and Peace , where you have to read chapter 1 to understand chapter 2. Congressmen have assistants and can easily partition the bill into pieces, assign the reading, and get a summary. Plus, most people that are going to vote for it already know most of what is in it and won't be persuaded by arguments about what pork is in there. Furthermore, most that aren't going to vote for it aren't going to be persuaded to vote for it anyway. I still wonder where the fiscally responsible Republicans were hiding for the past eight years.

No. Instead you have to reference Article 23, Article 32 & Article 4 to get through Article 17. I'd think that reading

War and Peace would be easier. Besides, the House voted unanimously to recommend that lawmakers and the public have at least 48 hours to read the legislation before a vote. This obviously did not happen. Why?

While I agree, that doesn't mean that the time alotted shouldn't have been there. That's like saying it isn't worth teaching a kid to make his/her bed because he/she is just going to make it messy again.

Too busy being moderate so they can pull votes. Also, many of them buying into the idea that government has a place controlling the market. This needs to change....

The words of the founding fathers of this country are no longer being considered: "A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government." ~Thomas Jefferson "Leave no authority existing not responsible to the people." ~Thomas Jefferson "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." ~Thomas Jefferson "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." ~Benjamin Franklin

I'm starting to suspect there's a reason unrelated to the Stimulus bill. This way, the next time the Democrats lose power and the Republicans (with Democratic support) try to push through legislation in a hurry, they can point to this outrage. And it won't work any better than pointing to the Democrats' outrage at things like the Patriot Act's hurried passage is working now.

Glad to see it worked so well for them. They went from controlling three branches of government to losing two.

The words of the founding fathers of this country are no longer being considered:

Nor have they been, by most lawmakers, in your lifetime. This isn't some sudden new development. I hope you weren't meaning to imply with the quotes that Obama is the first president - or even the first in a row - that believes in big government taking care of people?

Good point. Still wrong but I suppose that is way beside the point considering the topic...

Yup

I'm aware of this and have not implied anything toward Obama. Those principles (the ones that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were penned upon) have been lost for quite some time. These things that we are seeing now have been evolving for a while.

Barack Obama is our President....and I hope that he and the rest of the government can and will make this country better and stronger. However, I have never been one to accept change for change.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,

The system as a whole, when it was set up, was not intended to work or to be in place as long as it has. It has been in place for a long time with a tweek here and a tweek there. I don't subscribe to the belief that change is always good. Change is good when it is well thought out, logical and in the end works. While this stimulus bill may work in the end, I don't believe that it has been well thought out and... to me... does not have much logic behind much of it.

I agree, to a point. I truly believe that the ills that we are experiencing today is because we've veered so far off path. I've experienced a lot of feelings over the past few years and I feel like going back (pre-New Deal) is better than going forward. Government was NEVER intended to get this big, intrusive and powerful. In this respect, Ron Paul has it very, very right.

While this stimulus bill may work in the end, I don't believe that it has been well thought out and... to me... does not have much logic behind much of it.

Ya think?

Ill-conceived, bloated, pork-barreled piece of garbage with very little to stimulate the economy in the long-term. I hope it works, but spending didn't save Japan in the lost decade and the New Deal didn't get us out of the depression. World War II did.

Fairways and Greens.

    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
