I have been playing Mizuno irons for years and have been considering buying a new set of irons. I hit the AP2 irons recently and thought they were fun but I was wondering if it is really worth changing. Any opinions?

I was hesitant to go from Titleist 690MBs to the AP2s, but I have never regretted it one bit. You get the fel of a forged club combined with the forgiveness of a cavity-back combined with the workability of a muscle-back.

Get fitted and you won't be disappointed. I got them with the Dynamic Gold
S300 shafts, they were heavier and produced a better ballflight for me than the ProjectX shafts (which come standard). My only gripe about these is that a 2 iron isn't available.

I played MP30 and 32's last year, recently hit both the 52's and AP2 head to head with same shaft and found the 52's to be the better club when considering both looks and playablility, AP's may be slightly (very slightly more forgiving), 52's look better to me at setup

I like the feel of the 52's, they feel solid (even on hits toward the toe). The AP2's also feel good, slightly more clicky to me...BTW the shaft was ProjectX 5.5 in both sets

Do the AP2s feel better at impact than the MP-30s?

I don't really think that the AP2s feel any better. Honestly, I hit them fine. I just have been revamping my bag and seemed to like the AP2s better than the new Mizuno.

I recently started playing the AP2's after playing 660 blades... I absolutely love them... I can't speak for the Mizunos but they obviously make great clubs... Just my two cents

How many threads and posts are required on the topic of the "feel" of forged irons for some people to believe that clubs don't feel better/different because they are forged?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Let's keep it on topic, and the age-old discussion you're referring to isn't.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I have a somewhat similar situation last year. I have been playing the Mizuno Pro's for close to 8 years. I really like them and never found anything that really caught my eye. For my 50th birthday my wife wanted to buy me a new set of irons, so I went on the demo trail. I tried all of the Mizuno and the Titleist line.

What I found was none of the clubs seemed that much different then what I was playing. I would have just kept my old set but not very often is a wife willing to buy a new set of clubs so I got a set of MP60.

Moral of the story, I wouldn't buy a new set unless there is something wrong with your old set or the new set can enhance your game.

Best reply I have heard. That's the way I am leaning. I don't think I'll replace my irons unless Titleist calls me and says they will replace them for me. For the money, I just don't see a difference.

On that note, how do you know when you should consider replacing your irons due to wear? My MP-32's still hit decent, although I don't really remember exactly how they hit when I first got them. I suspect that even if the performance has deteriorated, I wouldn't even know since it was such a gradual process. The club heads physically look pretty beat up but still have grooves on them.

Basically, how worn out are your clubs before you consider replacing them with a new set?

I've been plaing them since last August and love them. The only other brand I've owned that played as well as these were my Mizuno T-Zoid Pro's.

My MP30s are in pretty good condition. I would bet that the reason is that I didn't hit a shot with them for close to 5 years.

However, I did wear out my MP14s before I switched to MP33s (then switched to MP30s). I decided to switch when there was a quarter sized mark on the sweet spot of the club. I don't know if I was really losing all that much in spin and the groves looked pretty good, but it was just distracting. My current debate isn't due to wear, basically just because I am getting back into golf and if I am going to be hitting the ball terribly, might as well be doing it with something new and shiny.

  • 3 years later...

Had them twice................coudn't make up my mind! Finally gave up trying to like them and bought Callaway Razr X Musclebacks. Love the thin sole and top line as well as having the ability to move the ball better than with the AP2s. My 2 cents

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
