How long before they dominate the golf club business?

they have the #1 golfer on the roster and it seems a bunch of other pros are quickly switching over.

i would guess to say they have the most resources to develop and test new equipment, did i mention they are used by the #1 player?
LOL.

Anyway, I guess my question is, how long before they absolutely dominate the market with the best product, pricing, and availability?

I'd say right now Titleist still has a lead over Nike.

While they don't have Tiger, they do have Vokey Wedges, SC putters, and the most played ball on the tour.

In those 3 categories they are definitely in the lead.

I agree that they arent the leader, now...

But Im guessing within the next 5 years, Nike will own the Golf Club Industry, thats my opinion. I just think that the following of Tiger will soon be followed by other pro's and although vokeys are great wedges, there are already many other wedges that already compete with them.

Scotty's are a brand by itself.. I know they are titleist per say, I just view them as Scotty's and not titleist, even though they are.

As for prov1's, nike already has has several great comparable balls..

Im just saying Tiger Woods is the best marketing machine since Michael Jordan, and since Tiger uses the clubs sales are gonna go up, up and up. Which hopefully will be creating revenue for them to invest in the best and most innovative testing and technology on the market..

They're definitely on their way. Not only do they have Tiger, but they are and have always been the best marketed companies ever in the company of Apple. I mean some of the commercials they put out, not just for golf, are just sheer genius.

They also are pushing the innovation front, which is something a company like Titleist can't pull off. For example the Square Headed Driver, Adjustable Driver, even their Nike iC putters. So yeah, they're definitely a force in golf to be reckoned with

You guys are probably right.

Even if they win by the numbers, though, I think the "purists" will stick with the likes of Titleist for at least a few years. I know I'm not switching to Nike anytime soon.

Hopefully , they won't have that much market dominance. If Tiger's knee goes again or his game goes, they'll have no chance. I think you underestimate Callaway and Acushnet as well.

As for kit, Nike have some good balls, clothes and shoes but as for the rest.....with the exception of the CCi forged (excellent, but not even sure they still do these) and VR split cavity or blades (very good if a bit garish), yuck. They don't make enough decent gear to dominate the pro market by any means. They'll undoubtedly sway heads through great adverts, the "it's Nike, it must be good and they're sooo cool!" effect and by buying other marquee names to their roster.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist so I might be a bit biased .

I'm not sure that they will dominate the pro game, because while they have the money other companies have the experience. Drivers will change and Nike may get the edge there, but as far as irons and money clubs I don't think they'll compete soon, though the TW VR line is a good starting point, though some say they are exact painted replicas of another maker's club that tiger liked.

They'll take the young "ooohh shiny" and "must be good cuz its nike or expensive" crowds, though.

Let me see if I understand the question.......

They don't have the best/most popular ball.
They don't have the best/most popular irons.
They don't have the best/most popular drivers.
They don't have the best/most popular wedges.

But, solely on the basis of "having" Tiger, they're going to dominate the golf market?

I just don't think so. There's no doubt that having the preeminent player in the world endorsing your stuff is a biggie. But it really comes down to the "stuff" when all is said and done. Read the equipment threads on this forum. When was the last time anyone said, I play this or that because Tiger/Phil/Jack/whoever plays it......? Casual golfers might be influenced by that, and that drives a lot of sales, but you won't "dominate" the market unless the serious golfers buy your stuff, and serious golfers care about performance, not which pro you were able to convince to put your name on their bag.

I don't see them dominating in 5 years but I do see them winning a lot of people over with their marketing gimmicks of Tiger & Co. I believe TM dominates the driver market, Titleist dominates the ball market, Titleist and Cleveland dominates the wedge market, SC/Odyssey dominates the putter market, and not sure about the fairway woods, hybrids, and irons. The companies that dominate will keep up unless they do something drastically awful to their lines. Oh and by the way, I think TM will always have Nike on price and in the driver section since they push sales so much faster with newer clubs coming out.

Its possible. Im seeing more and more VR irons everytime i play. Ive also seen more nike balls on the course over the past year. And their sumo drivers were always poupluar. If Nike starts catering to the "better player" as much as titleist does, i belvie nike can overtake titliest. I dont think they will competley dominate the market, mostly because taylormade releases a new line of clubs every 2 weeks..

How do I get in on that action?

Im just saying Tiger Woods is the best marketing machine since Michael Jordan, and since Tiger uses the clubs sales are gonna go up, up and up.

News flash: Tiger's been with Nike since 1996. They didn't have a full line of golf products in 1996, but they have had them for quite a few years now.

I suspect that Nike has earned their stake in the golf marketshare. They make decent product and have the perfect poster child. In no way will this make them dominate.

Now much like every other company sometimes their new products will be successful and increase their marketshare. Other times they will flop and decrease their marketshare.

While they may continue to have a good share of the market, They aren't going to "dominate" it in 5 years, or 10, or 20. Nicklaus played MacGregor when he was #1.... they made a good product, but never dominated anything.

Having the endorsement of a few Tour players is good advertising, but it's not enough to turn the industry on it's head. I don't see Ping and TaylorMade and Titleist fans deserting the gear that they like and trust just because of Tiger's influence. Most real golfers use what they do because it suits their game, and it makes no difference whose name might be associated with it.

this is exactly what i think

most ppl i come across think im a big tiger fan because most of my set is nike... im not that big a tiger fan but i play nike clubs cuz they fit my game... heck besides the shoes and the clubs... i cant stand alot of their other stuff... i dont own nike golf clothes... not even socks... if i went shearly on looks and could afford some of the stuff... id be a callaway man... my fave shirts are callaways... besides my bubba golf stuff... so tiger hasnt influenced me and its kinda turning me off on the brand because ppl believe that i am influenced by tiger... i play what i play because its what suits my game

I never liked Nike clubs (and still don't like their irons) but at my club's demo day last weekend I hit all the various drivers from the five company's there (TM, Callaway, Cleveland, Nickent, and Nike). I'd hit and liked some of the Titleist D2 drivers but the new Dymo Str8-Fit, which I felt was a gimmick, was absolutely the best driver outta the bunch for me. I bought one. Last year, I hated their drivers.

However, I doubt they'll dominate the entire market for some of the reasons mentioned already.

I don't think they will dominate, but I don't mind if they do well, since they are a local company here in Portland. I know everything is made overseas, but they still are still a huge employer here and pretty good corporate citizen.

Well, Nike started making clubs in 2002, so they've come a very long way in seven years. Where I do think they might have an advantage is in Asia and China. I might be wrong but I think they're a more well established brand over there, especially China.

The Nike brand was and is built on marketing backed up with state of the art technology. I don't expect them to dominate the golf equipment market simply because they are a relatively new player in a field of established companies. But they have certainly made their prescence known and their competition will definitely be factoring Nike in on their future plans/product lines. I happen to like Nike golf products, but I can't say that they are intrinsically better than other companies products. I bought mine primarily because they are geared toward the more forgiving side and because of price. I was shopping for what I specifically wanted and the Nike stuff I've got fit the bill and was at a competative price point.
