What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

Thread Starter
Shot 34 on the back nine at Whispering Woods today, -2, and really I missed two or three other makeable putts. I missed two GIRs, and one was just short to a front pin and the other was just a little up and right (made a good up and down to save that one).

I'm currently a 2.0-ish index. I hit three shots "really well" all day.

10, I hit a drive a bit heely and a 5I a touch heavy.
11, I hit a 6I a bit on the toe.
12, Pull-hooked a drive, thinned a hybrid, and hit a sand wedge a tiny bit heavy.
13, Heeled a hybrid, then hit a really good 6I.
14, blocked a 5I.
15, Popped up a drive a little bit, hit a great 3W, hit an average SW.
16, Heeled the hybrid again, average PW.
17, Great drive, decent second shot.
18, Average drive, slightly toed/thin second.

So it's not like I made a bunch of up-and-downs, chipped in twice, etc. My misses were simply playable - sometimes by luck (#12 the duck hook), and sometimes because of proper planning (#18 I played right of the hole because the fairway comes into the green from there, for example).

So I'm wondering: what's the best score you've ever shot when your game wasn't all there, but you really got everything out of it that you could have, and what was your index at the time?

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

I have to say that my best score ever on an off day is about 78. I couldn't hit my driver for crap, and my hybrids failed me. But, I managed to pull my irons off and get some good putts in. I was an 8 Handicap at the time. It was at my home course (69.1/121)

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

One time I shot my career low 39 (+3) at Leicester.

3 birdies
2 pars
2 bogeys
2 doubles

If I could've just parred one of the bogeys/doubles, and parred one instead of doubled I would've shot even haha.

My index was around 15 at that point in time.

i honestly dont know my all-time low on an off day, but just the other day i shot a 38 (+2) on the back nine but i felt like i played like crap. no spectacular shots, 3 missed greens, and 17 putts

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

probably 2 weeks ago, when i shot a 39 for 9 holes (+3). However, i had 6 bogeys and 3 birdies, some holes i did great, but most were pretty crappy. I also wasn't playing with a driver at the time.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

I went a month to the day without picking up a club.....went and played on Wednesday and Thursday.....well over my hcp, but broke a hundie.

Funny how much I forgot over the month...looking up and other stupid mistakes.

Gonna try harder to get some range time in prior to my next round...whenever that will be.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

-2 is my best on a day when everything wasn't quite firing on all cylinders.

My typical round on an off day is probably 75ish though.

As bad as this sounds, I shot a -7, 65 last year and didn't have everything going either. Missed three 3 foot putts for birdie and had a few random snap hooks pop up with driver but they stayed in play and I was able to recover fine on those holes.

These scores were from Kearney Hill Golf Links from the blue tees.

With 65 being my personal best and still felt like I left shots out there, I don't see myself ever having what I would consider a "perfect" round and chances are I'll never shoot a 65 again either. lol

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

the thing about golfers is....everyday is an OFF day. Even if someone were to shoot the round of their life..."and that was missing a 3 foot putt and shanking a etc......"

golfers are melodramatic.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

Funny you ask this, it just happened to me a few weeks ago. I hit the driver horribly, had no idea where my irons were going, and wedge shots were at best mediocre. The saving grace was I made evry putt I looked at and shot -3. I might have hit 8 greens in regulation all day. I felt after the round like I had just got my tail whipped but somehow won the fight. Weird Day.

Paradoxical as it may sound, I find that my best scoring seems to be when nothing is really great, but everything is OK and you basically make everything inside 6 feet.
Earlier this year I had 75 on my course, playing off 6. On one 9 I had 9 x 4s (which means bogeys on both par 3s) and 39 on the other 9 which included a double but six one putts.
I find that if the driving is reasonably accurate and you're either on in reg or just off and chipping well and putting well, a good score can look like some pretty ordinary golf - meaning that below average iron play can be countered by decent chipping and good putting on true greens.

When I am analysing my rounds I find that if I mentally substitute reasonable putting and chipping for the errors I made, I can reassure myself that I actually played quite well, despite a nasty score.

In stableford competitition it is very clear to me that good scores are from an accumulation of 2 pointers (nett pars) and a few 3 pointers, rather than a bunch of 3 pointers but several misses.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

LOL.

Prob 75 or so, which is a good round for me even for an "on" day. I can also remember striking the ball really well, feeling good, and shooting an 84.

Sometimes you've just got to shake your head at this silly game.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

I actually had that round today. My driving sucked on the front nine, and my iron game wasn't on at all. But, I did manage to make in a lot of putts, and so I started counting. I think I made in about 150 feet in all of putts.

I shot a 78

A good golfer needs his 'bad' rounds to be 75-78 and his good rounds at even par or under. A great golfer then has his 'bad' rounds at even par, and his good rounds at 65. (Thanks Adam)

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

I had seven putts for birdies on one nine, and could only capitalize on one of them. Didn't play too well the second nine and walk off with a 77. A weird feeling posting a decent score while not feel like a hit a shot well all day.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

There are on days?

As a teen with a 15 handicap I once had a round of 85 that featured

no drive over 200 yards
no fairways hit
missed every green in regulation
fortunately, I took no penalty strokes and had no 3 putts

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

I just today really "get" what this thread is about. I cussed my way around the course, had temper tantrums, double crossed some drives, and couldn't hold greens because they were ROCK hard (I really hate this course). In fact I had 1 GIR. 1!

Well I add it all up and stick it in the spreadsheet & what do you know, I played directly to my handicap. I wasn't expecting it to be under a hundred much less up to my handicap. I think the big saving grace (other than a birdie out of the sand) was that I only had 1 triple bogey and 3 three-putts. So I guess that's a big victory, and I'm expecting too much from myself.

Re: What's Your Best Score on an Off Day?

84 - 46/38

I was completely hungover and didn't hit but 2 fairways, thats right 2. Couldn't hit my long irons, but man I was spot on my wedges and putting.
