My 14 years old son has been playing basketball for about 7 years and he plays year round.

I have notice in the 7 years about 3 difference occasion when he has dramatically improved his game. Its almost like a build up skill that is released all at one time and something clicks and you notice a jump in his skills.

I wanted to share that with any parent that is too focused on their child improvement in any sports. As long as they enjoy the sport they will automatically get better and you will experience the difference occasions when you also experience that moment when your child improves dramatically from the last time you saw them play.

Just recently he has stepped up his defensive play on the court and its just fun to watch him hussle and play good defense because it takes alot of work and dedication to do so.

with this experience with my younger daughter, I just let her play and let her enjoy the activity and if she becomes passionate about something, I know that time and her own skill will come out at her time.

So when I play golf with my 14 year old, I will give him some tips but no big deal, I let him play and hope he becomes passionate about golf as he is with basketball.

My son (7) loves golf, he almost pays no attention to other sports unless its playing catch. He watches the golf channel almost as much as I do. I love kids and sports, no money, no endorements, just the game in its purest form.

My nephew played football I really loved to watch those guys play, they gave everything they had, and left everything on the field. Then he played baseball in highschool for a short period.

I played lots of sports when I was younger, got into high school and kind of stopped.

Growing up, I hated Golf. I only like fast paced sports, and/or team sports like basketball, football, baseball, or even tennis. I couldn't stand golf because I believed it to be slow-moving or boring.

I think now that I have an appreciation as to how much harder it is than any other sport I've played, I like golf far more than any other one.

I loved playing golf as a kid, but my school didn't have a golf team until 2 years after I graduated. If only...

*Added* It's nice to see my kids taking an interest in the game.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Well as a 16 year old I've noticed that more and more parents are trying to create "mini-Tigers" or "LeBrons". To me my main sport has become a little more important in the fact that I could go to college for a lot less if I can elevate myself above others and swim for a D-II or D-I school

The longer the kids keep an interest in any sport the better they naturally become and each kid progresses at different times but eventually they all improve with time.

I wonder if this is the same with studying and grades because my son gets mostly B and a few A, but I know he is capable of doing better if he applies himself more to studying and preparing for tests.

I wasn't really into golf at an early age. I did not really like watching golf on tv because it was boring but when i started playing golf, I started to really enjoy watching golf because i found out just how good these players were and they weren't just hitting a white ball round as hard as they can.

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.

My 14 years old son has been playing basketball for about 7 years and he plays year round.

You have the right approach. When our son and daughter were young, my wife and I exposed them to various sports and let them choose the ones they wanted to play. I encouraged them to play golf, and they did take to the game. John played on the college golf team at St. Lawrence University and was an All- American in his junior year, and is now the Head Pro at the University's golf course. Leanne played golf in high school on the "boys' team", and was recruited to play golf at Division 1 colleges, but decided that she did not want to play golf competitively any more. I told her that was fine----she did it when she wanted to, and then quit when she wanted to.

Her 5 year old daughter has gone with me to the practice area and putting green many times, and has had her own set of clubs since she was 3. She begs me to take her to the course, and people have gotten to know her. She is developing a real "love for the game", but that is her choice (although I have to admit, then I am super happy she feels that way).

My daughter is only 6 months old so it'll be a while before she'll have any interest in sports, but both my wife and I grew up playing lots of sports. I imagine she'll want to as well. I've always had a vague idea that I won't force my kids to play anything they don't want to play, but I will encourage them to try things to see if they like them. Nice to see that others have had success with that.

My son and started playing baseball at age 3. We worked at it almost every summer. My feelings were, "If you are going to play a sport, you might as well get good at it." He was above average but never really fantastic, no matter how much we practiced.

The thing that I have come to dislike about organized sports are the politics. My son's baseball team was one of the best in California, one parent decided to start their own travel ball team and took just about every player from my son's team, except for my son. It is hard to explain that type of rejection to a 10 year old.

My dad had always told me to get my son involved in golf. I finally did about 4months ago. It is so nice to not have to worry about my son getting enough "playing time," or parents yelling at my son if he makes an error. I also got tired of every other parent telling me that their son was going to be a professional baseball player. One parent was even telling his son not to worry about college because he is, "Going straight to the pro's right out of high school."

My son absolutely loves to golf. We are both beginners and what has been fun is watching our scores go down as the number of "good balls" we hit has gone up. After four months of playing we have watched our scores go from the high 70's/low 80's (for nine holes) to the high 50's/low 60's. We have a great time and can't wait until we break 50. Where I live, golf is cheap so we play everyday.

My son is now 11, I wish I had gotten him involved with golf when he was younger like my dad had suggested.

These are exactly the types of parents I was referring to. This type of "parenting" is disgusting to me, and if someone other than the coach tried to yell at my kid for making an error they wouldn't do it more than once.

One thing I like about Golf is a 55 year old can beat a 22 year old... You can't say that about any other sport. Although, to my Dad's chagrin, this is slowly starting to change.

Golf teaches a lot of lessons. Working hard, not taking shortcuts. No one is going to hit that ball in the hole for you and if you don't do it properly it isn't going in.

Not to mention the fresh air and exercise. Too bad neither of my parents were golfers or interested at sports at all lol. I wish I had been pushed into it when I was younger. Oh well, I might've burned out or something.

Why is what the other guy did political? You said your son was good, but not fantastic - perhaps the parent who started the team had contact with a better player than your son? Did the parent pick guys who were not as good as your son?

My kids enjoy playing on the Rec soccer teams, and my son also enjoys baseball and basketball teams as well. I don't force them - I just sign them up when the season begins.

However, my kids don't necessarily "practice" on their own time. I will work out with them during soccer or baseball season, and prepare them before the seasons begin. They attend camps during the summer as well. But if it wasn't for me, I don't think they would play on their own. But some of the kids we play against - for example, a 7-year-old girl that can do a soccer slide tackle. How did she learn this?

There's no "pick up" soccer or baseball happening anywhere - you have to be on a team in a league in order to play. Same for football. How do kids manage to improve their skills, if the only time they play is during the league - games and practices? The league for soccer, baseball, football only last for 2 months or so.

What am I doing wrong as a parent to help my kids increase their skill level? Or is the reality that "If they truly loved it, they would play all the time on their own?"

Parents ruin sports for kids.

I loved my organized leagues when I was a kid...but the pickup games with friends, with no parents around, where always the best. The truest form of competition and sportsmanship is learned there. When you can go after your friends and then walk home together and pop a soda, that's the lesson you want to learn.

I wonder if the last pickup game we all played, if any of us knew it would be the last? Good times...

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
