Buy from reputable sellers.

Try and make sure they aren't from China. This isn't a nationalist thing, but your chances of getting fake clubs increases.

When your clubs arrive, check them to make sure its everything you expected. Make sure they have serials and are legit. Inspect the shafts and heads for damage. Make sure they are the correct flex, lie, etc.

Pay using a credit card. If you use a debit card it's much harder to get your cash back than it is if you use credit, send them back and refuse payment because you didn't get what you wanted.

Leave feedback.

If money is no object, then you can go through the automated bidding process where ebay will bid for you.

2) Look for items that have a "Make Best Offer" option. I did this and got a brand new rife putter for $140 with free shipping.

3) Never purchase from someone that says "All sales are final."

Some good sellers are timtheputterman, 3balls, lostballsretail and if you are in the market for high end shafts at ridiculously low prices then try Gerryzu. I purchased a brand new Accra shaft for less than $70. This particular shaft retails for more than $300.

I have a fair amount of ebay experience.....My wife and I's ebay account has a rating of over 300 so we have done alot of buying and selling on the bay for a non business....here are a few tips when buying.

1. Buy from people with at least 20 transactions and 95% positive rating......i know that alot of people say only 100% rating but you cannot please everyone.
2. Before you bid on something track some of the same item and find out what they are going for....for instance if your looking for a set of used Mizuno mx irons then find some, watch them, see what they are actually selling for then find some to bid on and don't pay more then you need to. If it goes for more then it should then don't keep bidding, just find another one to bid on....with golf gear on ebay there will always be another one.
3. Pay attention to the shipping rates and item cost, you have to look at the combined rate to get the actual price and often times people will put higher shipping rates then needed looking for the people that aren't paying attention.
4. Check the return policy....i have never had to return anything to a seller but i always see what there policy is, if they don't have one then skip that item...there will be others...
5. Patience....patience...patience......You can practically steal stuff with some patience.

Have fun......

Some of my recent golf eq purchases.....Mizuno MX-25 iron set $224 shipped. Callaway Big Bertha Diablo Driver New $108 shipped, Tour Edge Bazooka geo max hybrid new $32 shipped.....
Now i didn't end up keeping any of those because i decided to go the custom fitted components route but that is a example of the deals out there.....

Do this only with reputable sellers. There are a handful of great golf sellers on eBay - see a partial list given above by golf_junkie27. We can offer more if you want. As a general rule, 99+% positive feedback over a good number of sales. This does eliminate some small "garage sale" sellers. And double on that "ships from USA". And if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Decide how much you're willing to pay - TOTAL - and bid that, minus the shipping cost. Do this whenever - some people do it closer to the end of the auction, but that takes some active buying. eBay does a modified VCG auction, so bidding your max early and then just waiting to find out if you won is fine.

1. Only use reputable dealers. My minimum is a 500 feedback AND 98%+ positive.
2. Unless the item you are looking for is rare or you are in a hurry, put a few on your watch list and let them end before you bid on one so you can see what they are going for.
3. Don't bid until the last 20 seconds. 10 is better if you trust your internet connection.
4. Whatever you plan to bid, add a nickel. I just won a hybrid club with a bid of $52.05 with about 5 seconds remaining. The previous high bidder had set his max bid to $52.00. I'm sure he was pissed, but I won and got it for about as little as was possible.
5. Pay quickly so they will leave you positive feedback and so they will ship quickly.

Use a Sniper, this will save you a ton of money and prevent bid wars.

Free sniper:
http://www.justsnipe.com/

Enter the Max amount you want to pay and it will bid on it the last second, either you win with the price you want to pay or if anyone outbids you, you don't end up paying more than you should. And remember to add 2 cents to the max you want to pay. If you want to pay 250$, put in 250.02. This will insure a price overshoot and giving you an edge if someone enters 250$.

Use it. Love it. Profit

Thanks for all these tips, they're great! Especially the sniper program, i'm trying it out right now. So does it just put in your max bid with 10 seconds left, or how does it work?

But I have one big question, how do auctions generally increase in price as the deadline is coming? Like if the auction is for 100$ 2 hours away, how much should I guestimate the auction will go for? Any help would be appreciated.

look for completed listings for the same product on the left bar. See what prices they ended (the green ones were the sold ones, not red). The price it will be sold for usually does not deviate more than 10%. So find the avg price and set that as a bar. But spend what YOU want to spend, if the average is over your budget, don't buy it.

I also am searching for the seller's names, the ones posted, and it is giving me 0 results.

lots of good advice here. i have over 4000 transactions on ebay so far (yes, four thousand) with 100% positive feedback (both selling AND buying). if you ever have any questions, feel free to PM me.
i especially like the stay away from China sellers (although sometimes you dont know they are in China because they dont list where they are). do research on the most counterfeited models (Callaway, TaylorMade, etc), and buy from reputable sellers. personally i wouldnt buy anything from anyone with less than 98% positive feedback. anything less than that and they have A LOT of unstatisfied customers (if they have a lot of transactions i mean).
theres lots of little things to look out for. dont hesitate to PM me if you need some help. Im on Ebay everyday.

Hmm, i'm having trouble finding it.

1. look for what you want to buy

2. check off the parameter you want from the left bar (dexterity, right handed, whatever you want your clubs) 3. click completed listings (you must have an ebay account to use this) and you will see all the similar bids that have ended, the green highlighted prices are the prices the things sold for.

When you review pictures make sure that they are of the actual product and not a photo. request one from the seller. Be careful with seller with less than 100 transaction and less than 99.8% feedback rating.

im kinda of iffy on this one sometimes...you see, i have over 4000 transactions on ebay. i sell a lot of stuff and buy a lot of stuff too. if the item is

BRAND NEW , i will usually post a STOCK photo of it just because its kind of a pain in the butt for me to take photos of it. if the item is used , i will ALWAYS take photos of it. but then again, when someone sees my feedback (100% Positive with over 4000 transactions), and that the item is new, and there is a stock photo, its usually not a problem for them. but if the seller doesnt have a lot of feedback and uses a stock photo, then yeah, i would be a lil worried about it, ESPECIALLY if its a USED item (i would NEVER buy a used item with a stock photo only). just recently i sold a brand new putter on ebay and used a stock photo. for the 1st time in 10 years someone emailed me and said they wanted to BUY IT NOW but was worried because it was a stock photo. i offered to take a photo of it to prove to them it was new, but i also said " look at my feedback. im a good ebayer with over 4000 transactions and i dont rip people off. i only use stock photos for NEW items. however, if you want me to take a photo, i will". ...they said that was good enough for them and bought it without the real photo... but anyway (sorry about going on a rant there, lol), stock photos are not ALWAYS necessary. it just depends on who is selling it and if its used or not. but yeah, if its used, DEFINITELY DO NOT trust a stock photo (in my opinion anyway)...good luck!

Use eBay's "Saved Searches" feature to continually watch for deals. You can be very specific in your parameters, specifiying price range, loft of club, brand, type of club, and more. Choose all your parameters and save the search, so you can easily conduct it with one click the next time you log in to search for that type of club.

I've had great luck on there picking up a 5 wood and a couple wedges, getting them all well lower than the typical going price. My stategy was simple, just decide what I was willing to pay, bid that much, and don't get frustrated when outbid. Since I was looking for pretty common items, whenever one auction would run out, another was coming up. I got my 906f2 which was in immaculate condition for $49. Got two Vokey wedges for 17 and 29. I'd say the going prices on each was about double, but by being patient I got good deals. The most frustrating thing about eBay was getting outbid at the last minute several times, to the point I figured the seller was tossing in their own bids to either drive up as far as they could or just bad luck. But in the end, it worked out well and I made some nice additions for $100, for what would have run me close to $450-500 brand new.

Buying:
Buy items that end in the middle of the night or early hours of the morning.
Best offer items - may aswell put in a low offer, you dont know what he has turned down and its free so you may aswell.

Selling:
With any clubs i sell, i always put '+ 3 free golf balls'. Just puts an edge over competition when buyers decide which item to bid on.
Low shipping - use psychological pricing on shipping (£5.99)
detailed description, clean up the club and use a really good quality camera even if you have to borrow one off a friend.
Make sure your item ends in the evening, so after work when you think everyone will be on their computers. - could go further with this by maybe making your item end in the evening on the most popular day for playing golf so if they see something they like when they are at the golf club, they may come home and search for it.

Hope all this helps

I snipe with $.9 over.

Use a sniper for sure - i use ezsniper. With sniper you set a bid ans chnge your mind later - if youbid on ebay direct you can't do that. You call also set it up so that id bids on the same item being sold be different people a few times, so if you don't win the first one it moves on to the second one

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
