Optimum Bounce on a lob wedge?

I want to be able to play it everywhere.
Bunkers, rough, fairway.

What is the best bounce for this?

My Clubs
Driver - LV4 10* R flex
Wood - sam snead persimmon 2 wood (for windy days)

I want to be able to play it everywhere.

I've tried low bounce lobbers (5*) and high bounce (16*). I've found the best is right in the middle, somewhere around 10*. It's by far the most versatile. I think that's around the number that Mickelson uses. I'm not sure where the whole idea of ultra low bounce lob wedges came from. If you are trying to cast the club to hit a really high cut-lob, why not just carry a 64 instead and put a more normal swing on it?

The bounce that is "correct" for most clubs depends heavily on the conditions in your home course. Even if the goal is to hit it from everywhere on the course, different courses have different fairways, rough, and bunkers.

All other things being equal, I'm in favor of more bounce, as per Utley's theories on the matter.

I agree (yet again) with Shindig.

Depends on your swing and more importantly your course set up.

For example, in Australia, generally our fairways although very green and lush, are quite tight.

with my lob wedges, I dont like anything >10degrees.

Wedges are such a personal preference.

My old vokey 58 was 14 degrees but I ended up grinding it down to an 8.

Yea, if the ground is soft, and you risk sliding the club right under the ball, go with higher bounce. If the lies are tight, less bounce. Both? Get something in between.

Most people like to mix up the bounce angle on their wedges so they have a more versatile bag. I am personally going to go with 52.9-10, 56.14, and 60.04 as I complete my bag.

I have a 1.5* bounce 60* in my garage. That is the ultimate flop shot wedge but i still won't put it back in my bag. That low bounce is terrible out of bunkers, and a full shot has to be struck perfectly. I now have a um, can't remember what bounce 58* see signature. I just know that the bounce is good out of bunkers, and not great for flop shots.

Mickelson used to play a 0 bounce lob wedge 60 degree made by Yonex called the PM model.It is still the only 0 degree lefty lob that I know of.Cleveland had a 3 degree 588 but I do not think they make it anymore.If you remember years ago Phill had a commerical that he hit a ball off the gym floor and into the net on a baketball court and that was for Yonex PM wedges.I can hit mine full bore about 40 yards out and 30 yards up.

If you're a 12 handicapper who thinks he needs less bounce, something's probably wrong with your chipping motion.

Bounce is a good thing. And you can hit a bunch of proper shots with a 14 degree bounce club from pavement... so the whole bit about "firm" conditions loses traction fast. Maybe it matters if your bunkers are more like clay...

Well I asked the club pro and he said a 10 degree would be best for the course. So thats the one I asked him to order in. Should be getting it in around Wednesday

fair point, but for higher handicaps, chipping with a high bounce wedge is a recipe for disaster, many more skulls. For people struggling with skulls, the biggest piece of advice i'd give is stop chipping with a high bounce wedge. They will make better contact and ultimately have more confidence

I have to agree here. I'd say I'm still a high handicap player. I definitely prefer more bounce than less. When I thought I wasn't a high handicap player, I also thought I needed less bounce. Now that I'm better, I realize I need more. If your hands are leading the clubhead, 14 degrees really isn't 14 degrees anyway. I've hit plenty of clean 16 degree sandwedge chips from a tight Texas lie. You can really let your hands lead when you can trust your bounce to thump it's way off the turf after you hit the ball, I've found.

Great thread. As Stan Utley and others say, bounce is much more a friend than an enemy for most shots, and I am glad that the pendulum seems to be swinging back towards somewhat more bounce in the wedges again. I think about 8 or 10 degrees for the 60 is about right. I currently am using Nike VR 60 degree wedges, have alternated between a 60.06 and 60.10. The 60.10 seems to be a little friendlier over all. It is somewhat easier to serve up chili with the 60.06 and I think I have skulled a few with it too.

i use a 60* with 4 * of bounce i open it up alot for high lobs.and low bounce helps for that

      Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept.       I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
