  1. 1. Before November, 2009, was Tiger Woods good for golf?

It's a valid question. One which needs asking.

Not IS. WAS.

Sure some cash cows have been gored. Sure without Woods there will be fewer yells of "In the hole!" (Wonder if those Tiger-fans knew of Woods' other predilections?)

The money waterfall will taper off a bit. So what? Is success for golf defined by money? Or by a bunch of basically good guys going out and competing?

Was reading this article, http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-a...4.story?page=1 , when it occurred to me to ask the question.

Tiger's weirdness didn't start last month. It's been around from the first.

There have been other weird and unfriendly golfers and control freaks.

Has Woods been more weird than Hogan? About whom a man some described as his friend--who years later remarked that he didn't really know him--joked about sitting at a table alone with all his friends?

Was, is, and will be. He's this generation's best player, and one of only two (that I'm aware of) who brings in tons of interest from

non-golfers . I don't know anyone who doesn't play golf who enjoys watching Phil Mickelson or Steve Stricker. But Woods (and, admittedly, Daly) draw plenty of non-golfers. Also, I found this quote from your article to be particularly great and relevant.
"If you're kind of dialed in to what's going on, you heard rumors over the summer about marital issues there," said Daniel Wexler, a golf historian and author of several books. "But why would you pursue it? It's not germane to what's going on at the golf course."

you make it sound like they guy is dead. Of course he was and still is good for the game. That should go without saying.

I agree. Really this question we all know the answer to. Even if you don't like the guy you know what he's done/doing for the game.

absolutely Tiger was good for golf. he will be again too. i personally root against him and have for the past 3 years or so, but he definitely took professional golf to the next level when he joined the tour. i dont see how anyone could say he was bad for the game (and havent seen anyone say that either)

Heck yes! Just look at how much TV ratings went up when Tiger was in contention and what he did to bring more people into the sport.
Just look at the simple fact that without Tiger, there is no Nike golf and you see the marketing power of Tiger.

Unfriendly golfer and control freak?

Tiger is not the biggest crowd pleaser out there in terms of contact with the audience, but when has he ever been unfriendly and a control freak? Truth is, he's given the world some of the best golf entertainment ever. He is one of the worlds best golfers, ever, might just be the best one too. I'd rather see Tiger playing some of his amazing golf and keeping a focus on his game than some average tour pro waving about and giving signatures all over the place.

I accept and respect Tiger for being who he is and what he wants to share with the rest of the world. Being one of the best athletes in the world it's no wonder he wants privacy.

How you can ask such a question is beyond me. Regardless of his scandal which we have learned about recently, he has still done so much for golf.

I have been saying for years( and getting flamed for it)that tigerwas not a good human being and was allowed to get away with things no one else did. Now we see what he really is. This is not just about bad judgement it is about him feeling he can do anything! He was allowed to do this by the GC and all the other broadcast companys and magazines. TIger was invincible as was his caddy. Well now he is done. He will never get his marriage back to where it was, that trust is gone forever. For me golf is way bigger then any one person, it will survive and go on maybe the prize money will go down but so what, it is out of hand anyway. I for one am already sick of hearing about him. He is getting what he brought on himself, not so invincible now is he? Sponsors are dropping him like a hot rock and his downward spiral will continue. I hope he never plays again.

I voted yes. Actually, I think his influence was becoming better but because the younger generation was striving to ovetake him - so the general standard was rising.

still don't like his spitting, potty mouth and club-throwing, though.

It's a valid question. One which needs asking.

Now you're emphasising the utter stupidity of your question.

It is not valid. It doesn't need answering. You may as well ask if steel was a useful contribution to the building industry. Not IS. WAS.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Prior to November 2009, Tiger was certainly good for golf. He was particularly inspiring to watch from 1997 up to his most recent US Open win. He was consistently playing at a higher level than had been seen before. The popularity of the game grew, thus more money, and more courses were constructed. The golf equipment manufacturers could spend more on R+D, so club and ball technology improved. The other golf professionals were forced to work harder, thus the overall level of play advanced.

I voted but that was a really dumb question. There is no discussion to the point, Tiger has been golf for a decade.

This question depends on your point of view. If you evaluate everything in terms of money, then yes, T. Woods brought more money, advertising, to the professional golf tour. However, I have many times turned off golf coverage because it was all about TW. I don't like the guy. I think he is an arrogant SOB, and the last month has proved it. I'm interested in many players on the tour, but not TW. Not everyone is a TW fan.

IMHO, Golf should be about many things, honesty, sportsmanship, hard work, self control. Golf has traditionally been a game of gentlemen, for mature people, not club throwing, cursing, and temper tantrums, and behavior more typical of a 13 yr old. From that point of view, Tiger has been bad for the game. He sets a bad example for youth and everyone else. I think the game would be better off with him gone.
