Ask yourself these questions before buying a bag:
Do I want a cart or stand bag?
How many dividers do I want (5,6,7,8,11,14)?
How many pockets would I like?
How much am I willing to spend?

www.tgw.com has a great way for narrowing down the choices by brand, number of dividers, and price. Perhaps answering a couple of these questions will allow others to offer their opinions also.

As for the shoes, really it's up to you. If you are comfortable, you will play better (my opinion). Go to the store and try a few pairs on and get the ones that fit best. You cannot go wrong with FJs, but do not buy them because of the name, buy them because of the way they fit.

Sorry I could not give you specific models, but I thought this might help you to narrow your search.

I bought a new pair of Eccos online a couple months ago. They fit great and look even better so much so I haven't taken them to the course yet. I figure I'll wait until I get my handicap down to where its respectable and then start dressing like a real golfer.

On the bag scene I bought a BagBoy sidekick cart in January. I used it a couple times with my old bag and that got tiresome quick. The old bag was more than a few years old and just too clumsy to get clubs in and out of quickly while trying to keep up with playing partners. So I visited Golfsmith after my last round and came out with a BagBoy Revolver Pro. Wow! It fits the cart like it was made for it, (it was) and the revolver feature is great. Even in my trunk at the local park practice range I can turn the clubs to be able to pull out the ones I want to practice with easily. Don't need to pull the entire bag up to get to clubs on the bottom anymore. Other plus features are the large side pockets and the cooler with magnetic closure. The cooler is plastic lined and has drain holes in case you use ice instead of a refreezable block. The only strange thing about it is the ball compartment is part of the cooler which is removeable. So if I leave the cooler at home I'll have to put my balls somewhere else.

So I'd suggest looking at Ecco and BagBoy. But I'm not getting rid of my FootJoy Contours, I have the rough finished brown ones, they're low maintenance and waterproof.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

If you play a lot in warm weather without rain, consider a lighter pair of shoes. I got a pair Nike Air Max Summer , and they are very comfortable and light. They are soft like a sneaker running shoe, but stable as any other golf shoe. Not bulky and hard like most golf shoes.

+1 on the Air Max Summers. Unbelievably comfortable. I love mine, and I dont see switching anytime soon. As much as I wore mine last summer/fall, you'd think they'd be falling apart, but they still look brand new. Of course I keep them clean, but they seem like they havent worn at all.

I can't tell you what will work the best for you but after 30+ years playing this game Ecco shoes and Ping bags are the only brands I will buy (that is until something better comes along).

I used to wear Foot-Joys. They were fine shoes, but I found they wore out too fast. I bought my first pair of Adidas last year. After 50+ rounds, walking in Florida, they are still in great shape. I don't think I will go back to Foot-Joy.

I like that bag as well. It has some of the features that I really love about my own bag but a little less bulky. I probably would have bought one of these first had I seen them before I found my current bag.

The top handle is worth the price of the bag all by iteself. It's a breeze to manuever inside your home.

Shoes are definately a personal thing. I have extremely flat feet and find that Addidas are the most comfortable for me. I recently got 2 new pair of golf shoes for under $100. Found a pair of Addidas Tech Response (tennis shoe style) on clearance for $40 and waterproof Rx Fit for $50.

The adidas tour shoe is what I wear. Extremely comfortable, but a little pricey. My lightweight cleveland bag has also been great. Cool look, great pocket features, and easy to carry.

I always loved Asics running shoes. Recently while at Golf Galaxy I tried on a pair of Asics Golf shoes and they fit like a glove. At $189 they are not cheap, but if you walk your course as I do the comfort is worth it.

I have over 12 pair of golf shoes and I find the Adidas to be the best. My favorites are the tour 360 black/red/white. By far the best pair of golf shoes I've ever had. Footjoys look nice new, but wear out very quick. Out of all of mine my least favorite are Callaways. I know why you can get them so cheap at the golf shows (2 for 40 bucks). Never again for me.

I've only had 3 bags and they have all been cleveland...

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
