Over here we call that a "twattie" and it is usually a round of whiskies for the rest of your 4. Gets expensive if you have 3 in one round!

Yes, I’ve heard the “dick-out” rule ever since I started playing as a kid. I had never seen anyone actually do it until a few years ago in Detroit. The group in front of us was two guys and their wives (I’m guessing mid-40’s). One of the guys tops it off the tee and it ends up short of the red tees. The other guy starts yelling “hey, that’s a dick-out shot!”. And sure enough, the guy flops his unit out and sort of does an ape walk (arms low, swinging as he walks) to his ball and his hits it, unit out and all, while the others in his group laugh wildly.

Its either the D-O shot or you can drop you pants to your ankles and proceed with your 2nd shot.

i played from the middle tees today (shot 76, 6045 yards, par 72) and afterwards decided for the fun of it, i was going to try a round from the forward tees (5295 yards).  i wound up 6 under par for 18, which was pretty fun.  i think i'm going to start rotating boxes on a regular basis, though i don't think i'll go all the way up to the front again, that was just a little TOO easy.

I've never played from the "up" tees but I do frequently play from the tips.  Sometimes when others join me they don't want to play the tips but they feel oddly compelled to.   Ironically a lot of time they shoot a better score.  Not because the longer distance doesn't affect them, but because they can't reach the fairway bunkers from the tips.    The back tees at the course I frequently play have a lot of "chutes".    They help to frame the hole better and they tend to hit more fairways.    The only real area where they're "punished" is on the par threes because they typically add 3-4 clubs from the tips.  The longest is the 2nd at 237! :P

it varies at the courses i frequent - there are several that it's a situation like you described where i can't reach the fairway bunkers/hazards from the tips, but then other courses tips put those hazards exactly in my landing area, which makes for a tough call.  do i try to hit a precision drive (not my strong suit) or do i play safe with a 3 or 5 wood, but leave myself a mid/long iron approach?  at the course i went to yesterday, the ladies tees pretty much completely negated all hazards, so i was bombing away on every tee without fear and usually finding myself just off the edge of the green.
