When you play a new course do you go to google maps to check it out?
I'll do this everytime I'm going to a new place and I'll get a little ruler out and measure
fairways and plot where hazards and things are 95% of the time the courses don't change from the map image and you can get a pretty good idea of what your in for.
Am I alone in this or just part of the quiet majority

Some of the smartphone apps have the distances on the aerial views of the holes. You can choose your spot and it will give you distances. I dont remember any specific names of the apps. I have seen it in one of hte iPhone apps.

Google Earth has a ruler feature that allows you to choose your units (I usually go with yards). You can measure point to point or plot points and get a cumulative measurement (say center of fairway). It's a pretty cool feature. the only factor you can't easily measure is changes in elevation. I've created little yardage books for courses using GE.

What a great idea, I have a GPS but it only gives numbers not views, I will have to remeber that one when going to play on an unfamiliar course.

I sometimes check Google Earth after playing a course. Something wrong with the software as it knocks about 20-30 yards off my drives. :)

Crossed a lake with my 2nd shot yesterday. Best hit of the day. I thought it had to be 200 yards. Map said 175.

Ah, reality.

I use it with the ruler feature. Especially when I'm playing a course for the first time. It's a great tool.
I also mark the courses on the map for future reference.

Just went thru my reg course where I know all the spots and such, it was off by 8-10 yds, but that may simply be me not having the map cross hair in the right spot.
I think now if I'd have known of this way back when, how many balls I'd have saved .Doubt it'll improve my score but if it improves my wallet then how can ya argue lol

I just checked out the club where my membership is to see how far I'm actually hitting my drives. My longest one is right about 300 (295) yds and I average 270 yds according to that measurement on GE. That's close because I hit the same spots just about every week on that course.

I always take a quick overhead look. I don't map out yardages, but I like to get a practical feel for a course in terms of spacial layout and terrain in a way that the scorecard map won't show.

Didn't know that, thanks.
