Today while playing in a best ball company tournament, I happened to come across 2 wedges on separate occasions. Strangely, both were propped up against fences; the first was a 50° Cleveland CG12 Black Pearl wedge, the latter was a run-of-the-mill pitching wedge. I turned them both into the Pro Shop immediately at the end of the round, notifying the head pro and starter who were on the premises. I know for a fact that it didn't belong to anyone in our tournament as our foursome was the first group out.

My question pertains to lost clubs. Is it morally wrong to ask the clubhouse to keep the clubs if the owners don't claim them? Is it wrong to want to keep them given nobody claims them?

I guess you could check back in a week and see if anyone claimed it.
I play with Vokeys and have a set of Cleveland CG14s so I wouldn't need to keep a wedge that I find. When I find a club on a golf course I always put it in the basket behind the seat or in the seat beside me. I never put it in my bag because I don't want anyone to think I was going to keep it.

it's not thoughts or intentions that count, it's actions. no matter what someone or some book may say to the contrary. a scoundrel who donates a fortune to a charity for tax purposes does more good than a social worker with a heart of gold.

I have to agree that actions speak louder than words...

It is not your property, someone might come back one day and claim it. Not today or tomorrow, but perhaps in some months.

happened to me.

I left my Yes! putter on a green before and it was handed in. The person at the desk said it wasn't handed in (I don't know why). A few months later I spotted it in the lost and found bag, I knew it was mine because i had a oddessy grip on it at the time.

Do we measure morality in quantity of good, or balance of actions? That scoundrel may well have done enough harm to entirely offset any good he does.

As for the clubs, I'd think you have a decent claim to them, though as others have suggested, the rightful claimant may show up much later than you'd think. I'd think a few months to a year would be enough that there's basically zero chance of the original owner showing back up. Personally, I wouldn't bother, I'd turn them in and forget about them. If anything, I'd ask that they be donated to the First Tee or some other program should no one turn up to claim them.

My home course donates all the abandoned items to local non-profit at the end of the year, so they probably wouldn't give something to anyone but the owner.

As far as your question to the morality, your request wasn't immoral, just kinda tacky.

On a side note, has anyone seen the lost and found bin at their local course? I got a chance to take a peek the other day and I was amazed at he amount and quality of the items people leave behind and never bother to retrieve.

Whoever came up with the saying, "A bad day of golf is better than a good day at work", is a moron.

i left my 7 iron and 56 next to a green earlier this year. got up to the next hole and when i was ready to chip i noticed they were gone. drove back and didn't pass anyone on the way and they were gone when i got there. next group i could see behind me hadn't even gotten to that hole yet. someone decided to fore go the rest of their round and drove off with my clubs. the wedge i could see someone wanting but taking a mans 7 iron is low. i turn in anything i find. don't need any bad karma on the course.

Is it morally wrong to prefer they give you the wedge, rather than someone in the pro shop add it to their bag? No. But it was both lost and found on their property, so either way it's not yours and you know it.

There are some good points being made here-didn't even occur to me that someone wouldn't come asking for their lost club immediately, but clearly it can happen. There is a certain legal time frame where the club/you would be entitled to the putter, just as if you found someone's wallet, or jewlery, etc., and turned it in to the police (could be 1 year, but you would have to check your state law). It would be nice if the club kept it for a few weeks/months, and if/when they let you have it they kept a record, so you could be contacted if/when the owner came a calling. Logistically that might be a problem however-I wonder how often people leave clubs on the course?
