What's everyones thoughts on choice of tee boxes? Play mostly as a single and sometimes get paired with people playing a further tee box than I like to. Don't have any problems saying what tee box I am going to play and more often than not the people playing the further boxes should not be based on their game. Go out today and get behind a foursome playing from the blue (6700 yds) and it becomes clear only one of them has the game for it. To top it off, they played honors on every shot all day including very short putts. Their group were all in carts, I played with a retired guy and his wife in a cart while myself and another guy walked. We waited on these guys all day long. Also did not help that they waited for the green to clear on every par 5 even though they all were 250ish out. My motto: mans' got to know his limitations.

A lot of players are playing in the wrong tee boxes, but that shouldn't be a problem if they weren't holding anyone back.

They should have let you passed by.

I've come to the conclusion that bad players arent really what causes slow play but bad players who have no idea whats gonna happen when they swing the club. I've played behind some guys who couldn't hit a decent shot to save their lives but they understood what they were TRYING to do..it wasn't slow. I have played behind guys who couldn't hit a decent shot to save their lives and had no idea what they were doing..slow as Christmas. One shot they would top, the next they'd hit right, the next they'd pull left, the next they would pop up...be in the middle of some trees and just swing away.

As for my thoughts on tee choice. Do what you want as long as you respect other players around you and aren't doing anything wrong. You are free to make the game however hard you want for yourself, but if you know people behind you are able to move faster, then let them through. No one has any shame doing that.

The vast majority of guys I've seen play from the blue or back tees had no place there and definitely slowed things down. I know there are plenty of talented golfers out there who can play from wherever they want, but I never notice them cause they're moving along like a golfer should.

I don't know why anyone would play tees longer than they need to be playing, unless there to practice longer clubs.

Who has more fun hitting a long iron than a short iron? Not I, as I cannot get it nearly as close or make as consistent contact as with a shorter iron. That's probably true for nearly everyone in the world. Maybe not the fun part, but the ability to hit a shorter iron better than a longer iron yes.

I get the most fun out of the game seeing great shots. I enjoy it even more when I have a legitimate chance at birdie. Not a 50 footer that leaves me feeling uncomfortable about a tap in par. That's why I like to practice so much to get better. The game only gets MORE fun as you progress (for me anyways). Something which in life, to be honest, is a rarity.

I will say this though, playing longer tees (practicing on them) is a great way to improve your longer clubs and a great way to practice getting up and down. As you will surely miss the green more often and by greater measures.

Very true - I used to be in the second group and now am in the first. I used to have to take a million drops just to keep up but now I don't need to.

Whats enjoyable to one person may not always be enjoyable to the next. If there were signs at a golf course that said "x-x handicap use these tees" and on and on, then yeah...but if there are no restrictions I have no right to say someone else should be playing from a certain tee. They could look at my game and be saying the same thing.

Agreed-if they can keep up pace of play then the tees they choose to play from is their business alone. But I rarely see that.

I don't know why you think I implied I have that right by any means, I just don't know how they have as much fun. I certainly didn't deny that could be more fun for them. It's not as fun for me to hit poorer shots and have a harder time making par (aka pitching/chipping in for birdie due to the hole being too long for them), however for some it may be.

You didn't say if there were open holes ahead of them??? If so then they should've let you through.

Not playing ready golf on a packed course is a crime. Period! That said, as a high capper I play from the blue tees @ my home course (6876 yards). I have a 5i-7i in my hands for my second if I don't have a good tee ball. I enjoy hitting these shots. I welcome the challenge. I would rather have a good tee ball and be holding a pw or GW though, but I figure if I want to be good @ this stupid game I need to learn how to hit mid to long irons. The only way to do that is play from longer tees. I have yet to play the tips @ 7621 yards, but I hope to be able to some day.

Yeah, pay your money do what you want as long as you aren't screwing up anyone else's day.

I always play from the back tees as my buddies are all low handicappers.

Apart from the fact i dont hit the ball as far as them, I very rarely hold the pace of play up.

We play ready golf anyways so as long as I am ready, its all good.

Sounds like you are complaining for no reason. If they had to wait on the group in front of them on every par 5 then there was no place for you to go. Next time talk to a marshal if there is a problem with the pace of play.

It would be interesting to see how you guys coped playing here in the UK.

The majority of courses over here have a 3 tee system - red for ladies, yellow for casual play and white for competition play. The higher end courses may have a blue tee but from my experience this is the minority.

Whenever there's a monthly medal or stableford competition at my home club everyone is expected to play from the white tees - whether you can nail a drive 300+ straight down the middle or 100 forward and 200+ to the right/left.

Makes for some loooooong days on qualifying rounds.......

I completely agree. Nothing is more frustrating than this. I mean I am no professional golfer, BUT I get to my ball, take a look at my target line, take a practice swing, and then swing the club. I keep the pace moving even if my shots aren't perfect. Nothing is more irritating then a bad AND slow player.

This reminds me of when i was out about a month ago. There was a group of 4 in front of us, 3 were walking, 1 was riding. At each hole, they all teed off from the Black(longest) tees and without fail EVERY time all of their 2nd shots were barely in front of the womens tees. I mean come on.

This first time i swung a golf club was on 5/8/10....

A 310-yd par 4 and a 360-yd par 4 take me the same amount of time.

Well, let me clarify: On either one, sometimes I'm going to make a 4, sometimes I'm going to make an 8. The 8's take longer than the 4's. But the tee box is NEVER the reason. If I swing well, the distance is never a problem for me. If I don't swing well, then hole takes forever, even if I tee off from halfway down the fairway. To repeat: the swing (really the ball contact) is always the difference between slow holes and fast holes. The length is never the difference.

So honestly, I don't think the group behind me is affected at all by which tees I play.

That said, I play the whites at my local course. It helps me stay mentally relaxed.

So you play from the ladies tees? Just kidding, I see your point... however, if these guys were playing ready golf as opposed to honors it would have really sped things up. People should play whatever tees that they want, whether it be the ladies or the tips, just so long as they are cognizant of what is going on around them and allow faster golfers to pass though if need be.

Sounds like you are complaining for no reason. If they had to wait on the group in front of them on every par 5 then there was no place for you to go. Next time talk to a marshal if there is a problem with the pace of play.

I think what he was saying was that they waited to take their second shots on the par 5s even though the group ahead of them was already on the green and they weren't trying to or didn't have a chance to reach in two.

    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
    • If PT doesn't work, then all other options (shots) are just temporary bandages of the pain. You may do more damage. Pain is the bodies way of telling you to STOP. Once you get rid of that, you are just now using an already damaged body part and put more stress and strain on it.
