I have been really working on my swing flaws this past year. So, I have a few swing thoughts going through my head. I have to really work on not allowing these thoughts to creep in after I set up and before I swing while playing a round.

My question is, after you set up to the ball and the moment right before you start your back swing, if a swing thought pops in your head..do you back off and completely start your routine over or do you go ahead and hit the ball?

This is mainly just a thread to see how many people do this than me asking for help. I know what works best for me. I am just curious.

I hit the ball anyway. I will only stop if a bug is annoying me ( usually wasps/mosquitoes ) or someone talking/yelling...

The only swing thought I have is focusing on my back swing. My biggest problem is either taking my hand out too much at the initial backswing or taking my hands in too much, etc. Usually if my hands are taken in right, the rest of it is easy for me.

Once in awhile, that split second where I start my back swing, if I feel my hands are off, I'll stop, step back, take a half practice swing, then readdress.

I used to swing anyway but lately I've been forcing myself to step off the ball and re-address it. Nothing good ever came of me swinging right when something didn't feel right. Sometimes I won't even step off the ball and just re-grip, waggle again, then go.

I will back away and go again. This time I will have a new thought which will be the target. It is these momentary lapses that can mean 2-3 strokes. You always want to give yourself the best chance to hit a great shot.

This is my thinking. If I am thinking of anything other than my target, I try and back off. I feel that it helps my focus and I know that the mental part can kill some strokes quickly!

I always play golf with one or two swing thoughts, being on the range or course. Don't see the problem with this really.

I speak of my game only, but what I have found is that if I focus on a swing thought (one particular part of my swing) then another part of the swing will get thrown off. The only thought that I consider not bad, for me, is tempo. I'm sure to each his own. I was just curious how this applied to everyone.

After I have addressed the ball and have completed my set up I ask myself " Is this good?" From there if I feel like it's good my only other thoughts are " Back and Through" to help promote a good rythmn. If after I ask myself if it's good I don't feel right, I start my set up all over.

I will back off . .but if I'm over-thinking too much I'll stop taking practice swings, etc, and just stand behind the ball, make my grip and visualize it and then walk right up and hit it. That works for me (as well as anything does, lol).

I have actually started doing this too. I used to take a practice swing before I addressed that ball, but I have recently started doing it just like you stated.

A co-worker of mine which happens to be real close to scratch will stand behind the ball to gather his target line, then step up with his lead foot (left for rightys), align his club behind the ball and aim it to the target, then step his right foot up then swing. He says he is relying on his muscle memory to take over and not his head. Once again, he is a great golfer and I would maybe try this at the range but not at the course until then.

On playing lessons with the pros, Colin Montgomerie talks about how he has a short list of thoughts that have to happen for him to get set up and swing, and if any negative thought creeps in among them, he has to back off and start over. He says this is the reason for his quick pace of play; that he can't stand over the ball very long without a negative thought occurring to him, and so he has to step up and play the shot quickly once he's decided what he's going to do.

If you're not in love with what you're about to do, it's hard to make your best come out. If something changes after you've taken the club away, stop and reset yourself.

Earlier this summer I dinked a 4-iron into a bunker, and two weeks later I was in the same spot on that course with a 4-iron in my hand and this thought went through my head as I was taking the club away: "Hmm. Two weeks ago I had this same shot and I dinked it into the bunker." Should have stopped right there, because guess what happened? Again?

I take a practice swing before I set up, so I'm taking a couple of programming halfswings before I hit it.

If I have one swing thought, it won't matter, but..
if I drop into a full replanning, I bail out because I'm not committed to the shot.

If I have a beehive brain and try to hit it anyway, I blow the shot bigtime.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
