why didn't you ask him? he's the guy teaching you.

your not trying to hit the ball on the backswing, going back too quickly can make it harder to get into a consistent position at the top.

Without being a psychic we can't read the mind of your instructor.
Without a video we can't say if your backswing might be too fast.

A fast backswing makes it tough to feel things and they tend to be sloppy.

I'm working on slowing my backswing down, but it's only so that I can hit the positions I need to hit more easily.

That said, too many instructors like to blame things on "tempo" because they don't know what else to blame it on. I don't care how fast someone swings if they can make the changes I ask them to make. If they can't, we slow things down, at least until they can begin to feel it.

Back swing is like a recoiling effect or like drawing a bow, it does not need to be fast. Slowing down the back swing keeps your body balanced and makes the transition to forward swing smoother allowing certain facets of the swing to occur before your arms get ahead of them. Tautness of your hips is what generates your power.

It's more smooth than having a slower swing.

I hit about 10 GIR so I say that's pretty smooth.

I did but all he said was I lose control.

and it's not harder to get into position. any PGA tour player with fast backswing tempo?????????

Relatively fast compared to other PGA tour players or just simply fast?

Going strictly from memory, G. McDowell, Tom Watson, Nick Price, Greg Norman, Ray Floyd, and Lee Trevino ring a bell. I could be wrong on a couple of those names. As long as your legs, torso, shoulders, and arms are all reaching the right positions in the right sequence (in both directions), then you might be right. My instructor wanted me to take the club back faster - increase the speed I took the club back, to match the rest of my body's natural tempo.

Yes, though the ultimate is probably still Nick Price.

Rickie Fowler fast? I am not saying you have to do it. Your "tempo" is faster than others. It depends on what you are trying to fix in your swing. I could care less how fast your swing is if you can hit it well. I was talking generalities. There is always going to be some weirdo like you that can do it out of the norm.....haha that is for your cocky retort.

did you mean to quote SM??

exactly, something is going wrong when you start the down-swing when you whip the club back.

post a swing video if you really want some answers.. and about the pga pro thing, Jim Furyk is on the Pga Tour. Not sure you want to emulate his swing though

I actually believe fast is ok, as long as your lines are consistent and you finish your backswing. Many many great champions have had a fast backswing. But they all kept the same tempo and always stayed in balance. Rory mac for example has a very fast backswing. But the transition is so smooth and his balance is perfect. Which to me is more important.
