Though characteristics of the major manufacturers will vary, they all making pretty good stuff these days.  I'm guessing you could hit most any of them well if fitted with the right shaft for your swing.  So my advice would be to schedule a club fitting a put a shaft that "fits" your swing characteristics.

And put the failed 3-woods on eBay (except) one to pay for most of your club fitting and new shaft.

What's in the Bag:
Driver: Taylormade SLDR 12*
3-wood: Taylormade Burner 15*
Hybrid: Taylormade Burner 19*
Irons: Callaway XR

Wedges: Vokey 50*, 54*, 58*

If this doesn't work, try a 4W. A Golf Digest piece from a couple of years ago said the 4W is quite a bit easier to hit than a 3W.

Baffler Rail F has no 4W, but...

* Titleist has a 910F at 17* loft and face open 0.5*

* Callaway FT has 17* loft with both draw and neutral faces (plus the model's been around a couple of years, may get better price)

* Tour Edge has some models which sport a 16.5* FW

In agreement with what they said, either get fitted for the right 3w head and shaft combo or use a 4W. I used to play a G10 3W which was at 15.5* but gained more consistency with a 4W thats 16.5*. Now i'm trying a 3W again...

How about the Cobra S2 5W at 18* ...... should be longer than the 18* TWS Hybrid.

from the deck....they can be a little tough to hit

depending on the shaft and head combo

i rarely use mine off the deck tho - tee mostly for target golf, if i need to hit a fwy, short par 4 etc...

my 2hy is 18* and is good for 230-235 from the deck

anything longer than that, better have some room to make a mistake

my HY will get me to a distance i am good with a wedge and a better chance for bird all day loong

as mentioned above a 4w is a geat option and usually just as long, and a bit easier from the deck

Before I was able to hit my 3 wood well I played a 14* Nicket. After awhile I got used to going after the ball. Then I wasn't happy with the distance the 14* rescue club generated. I put the 3 wood back in the bag and haven't looked back. What I found out, well for me at least, was that fairway woods don't like a wussy swing; you gotta go at it.

Well off the tee I have had great success with a 3W, but off the tee I prefer the driver as a. I am not that long and b. most my drives are in the fairway but when I use a 3W or Driver of the deck I end up with a low slice most of times.

I will try the suggested 4W .....

Thanks for the help !

Funny....I have found the exact same thing....thought I was in the minority with this but when I hit my 3 wood off the deck I have to go after it a bit.  If I try a slow smooth swing I invariably don't get good results.  I am pretty comfortable with hitting it now and it really makes the long par 5s a little easier to get a chance.

Agressive is the way to go. Trying to steer a long iron or a wood is a mistake.

I will go outside the box a bit and suggest you look at Louisville Golf and Joe Powell golf  both of which still make persimmon clubs.  Joe Powell is geared more toward traditional where as Louisville has some rather innovative designs in their Niblick line of fariways available in various lofts and graphite shafts.

I have a different approach. I have a fairly smooth tempo, but couldn't get a FW to work well for me because I made poor contact. About 10 years ago, I bought a 3W, not realizing it was a flex softer than what I normally hit. When I realized what I had, I made an effort to swing even smother, so I wouldn't over power the shaft, or I would snap it left.

Wow what a difference!  Good contact, and the ball just flies when you let the shaft do the work.

I hit a 10.5 K-15 driver in Regular, and sometimes a 10.5 TM Superfast in Reg., but my 3W is a Senior shaft, and I hit my 3 very long.

Plus the fact that I hit a little fade with my driver, and my 3W is a draw.

All 3W's are not created equal.  When I bought mine, Mizuno made both a 13 and a 15 degree 3W, as well as a 16.5 degree 4W.  I have both the 15 deg 3W and the 4W, but now I only use the 3W.  It's easy to hit.... typically about my 215 - 220 club, with sometimes a bit more when playing it from the tee.  For comparison, my driver is about 230 - 250.

Agreed.  I couldn't hit the 909 3W to save my life.  I just couldn't make solid contact from the turf.  I hit the Adams Fast 10 and couldn't pull my wallet out fast enough.  It has a different shape that really appeals to my swing.  I would recommend hitting several and finding 'your' 3W.  My driver distance is similar to yours, and I hit the 3W about 245 off the deck.

I found this. I tried out a TaylorMade R9, TaylorMade Burner, Ping G15 and Titleist 909F2. I own a TaylorMade Burner 4 hybrid so I thought I'd hit it well but couldn't get along with it. The R9 felt extremely heavy compared to the others. The Ping felt lovely and sounded great but I wasn't getting as much distance or as straight shots with it so I settled on the Titleist which I hit well, got good distance with and liked the look of at setup. The pro shop guy told me to try out the Yonex Nanospeed 3i before I bought the Titleist and that too was amazing. After another bucket of balls trying the two the Yonex (only just!) pipped the Titleist to the post for me.

I had a nice 15* 3 wood that I couldn't hit to save my life.   I practiced and practiced with that thing at the range.  I spent a fortune on range balls.  NEVER got consistant with it at all, I hated that thing.  Then I called and emailed a club fitter in CA.  After about 2 weeks of going back and forth, he made the best club I've ever hit.  Its a 3 wood of 17*.  Now don't go saying that makes it a 4 wood, because it does not.  Its a 3 wood length and head but has a 17* loft.  There's a big difference between a 3 wood like this and a 4 wood.  He put in a low kick stiff "fairway" shaft +1" (which all my clubs are +1" but have regular shafts).   Holy cow......this thing hits like a dream.  I love pulling it out of my bag and watching that thing go!!  I just shipped him a 5 wood and a 7 wood with the same heads this morning to be reshafted with the same specs of the 3 wood.  My 3/4 hybrid and 4 iron are going to be placed in the office corner as soon as I get these clubs back.

I suggest getting a custom club made and you'll never buy another club "off the rack" again.  For me its an easy thing....I can't play off the rack clubs anyway, they are too short : )

All my irons are +1.25" same as with yours ......... I have had custom made woods, but although physics would suggest upright lies, my wing is flatter than one would expect from a tall (6'9") guy, so I prefer standard lies ....... took me many years to find out, because whenever I walked it to a shop, the clerks always told me I should have longer clubs and at least 3* upright........

I had +1" woods but went back to standard lengths for control and even shortened my driver by 1" for added control....... my arms are long enough ..... ;-)

I just ordered the S2 5W (18* so actually about a 4W) ....... will have to practice .......

    • Day 134 (26 Apr 24) - played Minnesott today, worked with the mid-irons and approaches (especially the 7i).  Scoring was a little higher, but I was focused on making the needed adjustments to the swing to achieve desired distances.
    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
