Hey hows it going i am a new member of this forum and was wondering if you all had any tips for me regarding my driver accuracy. I was recently trying out a few new drivers and the golf pro at the shop told me that my swing speed was an average of 135mph. Now he recommended trying to slow my swing down to hit the ball more accurately but everytime i try that it ends up being worse then if i hit the ball at regular speed. Now i was thinking of switching shafts on my club to extra stiff instead of the stiff shaft and was wondering if that would help significantly or if anyone had any other tips you would recommend?

haha 135 huh? thats fast.  possibly change shafts so you dont spray it so much or attempt to work on slowing it down a little

i sense a little bit of sarcasim in your response there but trust me i didnt believe it either when he told me, but every place i have gone to since then i have been relatively consistent around that speed  usually 125-135 depending on the club so take it as you will but this is no joke so id appreciate it if i could get some honest responses, thanks.

Here's as honest as I can be.  If, in fact, you average 135 (which is about 10 mph faster than the longest hitters on tour) then you should be getting an X shaft, then have it tipped about an inch.

However, we all know that you don't average 135, do you?

i averaged 135 with the r11 driver i use a ping g2 now and i usually swing about 125 with that, but trust me you're not the first one who hasnt believed me when i told them and i know it sounds ridiculous but i do swing within that range, i just dont play enough to have my skill level where i would like it to be right now which is why any tips would be helpful.

When you are slowing your swing down are you still accelerating through the ball?  that might be why your drives are worst.  for a while when i tried to slow down i noticed i wasnt accelerating through the ball..maybe you should make a mental effort to think about it

i usually hit the ball 300-350 depending on the slope and quickness of the fairway, i have driven a couple greens on par  fours that are around 370-400 as well though but if not im usually hitting a pitching wedge for my second shot to reach the green. Thanks for the tip on accelerating through the ball i've never really made it a priority to constantly think about that but i will give it a shot and see how it works out.

You didn't mention if you are hitting right or left or both.  Are you just missing fairways, or are you going OB, into the jungle, or what?  A stiffer shaft won't necessarily make you hit straighter, especially if you are going right (assuming you are right handed) but at that swing speed an x flex is probably appropriate.  Also, slowing your swing won't necessarily make you hit straighter; in right handed golfers this sometimes produces more draw.

I did not offer much in the above, but consider what I did say--it is a multi-variable equation.  The flight of the ball depends on the delivery of the clubface to the ball at a certain angle and speed to produce the desired flight. One thing you might consider since you have no problem with speed, is to shorten the shaft.  This makes it easier to deliver the clubface accurately to the ball.  Shortening the shaft reduces clubhead speed some what, but this is no problem since you have it in abundance.

How old are you? Many teachers encourage younger players to let it rip at least through late teens, and then work on more control--this is assuming you at least keep it on the golf course and not in too much trouble. At the same time, play the course to your strengths; don't use a driver if you don't need it. If you are older--twenties or thirties, take a lesson or to and see if your swing is too long or short (yours is probably not short).  Again, some teachers will not want to shorten too much; I think the longer swing you have in your thirties, the better off you are when you are old like me.  But you don't want a swing so long that you can't control the clubhead.

So, too sum up this diatribe, take a lesson or two to make sure your fundamentals are sound, and get fitted by a reputable fitter for a driver that plays to your strengths.  Probably go towards a 44 or shorter rather than a 45.

Definitely avoid the R11 and all the matching, yet potentially sound barrier breaking, white accessories. Safety first.

dbuck thank you for the long and detailed advice. To answer your questions i am 21 yrs old and most of the time i am hitting the ball in the rough on the right side of the fairway but occasionally i do go into the woods or OB. I am also a student in college so i dont get to play as much as i would like to so i can fine tune different parts of my golf game. I know that an X shaft isnt the solution to all of my problems but i did like your idea of shortening the shaft because for some reason i generally hit down on the ball at a 6 degree angle rather then hitting it at a positive angle and i believe that could help me strike the ball better. I have also talked with a couple golf pros from my area and am trying to schedule something to have my clubs fitted appropriately and to find any irregularities with my swing. Thanks again for the advice!
