Today I started a new Group : Blade Affiniados !

As the name says it is about playing with Blades and/or Musclebacks ...... you want to learn anything on Players Cavity Backs, Game Improvement or Super Game Improvement clubs, all info can be found at the "Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting Forum".

The group is not only for people already playing blades, but also for golfers wanting to learn more on them or wanting to use them in future.

Whenever a high midcapper is asking only the slightest info on blades in any general forum, all he will hear is why not to play blades or musclebacks and that they are only for low single figure handicappers ...... but golfers forget that maybe only 30-35 yrs ago ..... you'd chose between blades and blades when starting golf.

There is no reason why even a beginner couldn't play modern blades or musclbacks. A bad shot with a blade isn't going to be a good shot with any (S)GI iron, but if you pure one, you want it all the time.

I don't believe in the fairytale blades or musclebacks will force you to become a better ballstriker, but the the extra time and effort you put in practicing with them, will make you a better ballstriker.

I don't mind being punished for a mishit, I will also be rewarded for a good shot !!!

Hope the group will become a "safe" place for getting advice on blades and musclebacks, discuss designs, issues, brands, models, etc......

If you enjoy playing blades or musclebacks or have any interest in them, please join this group !

It is an open group, but if you become a member, please add some personal info at the thread "Who is who, plays what, etc."

Cheers, Gerald.

Uh, I feel I usually have a pretty good vocabulary but don't know either affinados or affiniados, so I went looking them up but Google also seems ignorant.  I find "afinado" meaning "in tune" in Spanish.      Perhaps you mean aficionados ?

Does it really matter....... at many websites affiniados or affinados means people really being in to something, in this case blades (like your MP62 musclebacks).

Just like the Titleist 710 CB aren't as the name suggest Cavity Backs, but more like disguised blades/musclebacks to me......

Try German or something. Whatever language it's in it's definitely interweb jargon.

Yeah, they might be blades like my putter might be a short shafted driving wedge. Someone struggling with Titleist CBs or Cleveland TA3 is just posing as a poser - a "poseur" if you will. To be true affiniado, you have to be struggling with a muscleback type blade.

Yeah, I already put in a request with Huddler to have the group name changed since they, in their infinite wisdom, decided renaming groups was not something the owner of the site should be allowed to do. :-P

The group name should be spelled properly by early 2012.

Seems like Affiniados should be Aficionados ,,,,,, till the name has changed (if ever, might be complicated with links etc.) ...... the idea behind it is clear !

My 1st set was a hand down to me , a 1990s Wilson Staffs Cavity Back Irons with small head and some heavy graphite shaft , very difficult to hit . As my interest in golf growing , I started to do some research in the Internet , landed myself with Taylor Made Oversize Cavity Back with Stiff Bubble Shaft . I was playing mid 80s to 90s then. When I noticed that there are some distance delta and high dispersion , I started to do a research again and started to look into progressive blade. It is a component set from Goftsmith , Cavity Pro , small head , thin top line , cavity back from 4 iron to 7 iron , and blade from 8 to P , fitted with Riffle 6.0. I noticed that I m hitting more accuracy , distance control is better and a lot of feedback from the club. I was consistently playing a 10 handicap . 4 years ago , I was happened to be at a master club fitter who happens to carry KZG in Colorado. I was accompanying my friend who is looking for a set of KZG. Before that , I knew KZG are good clubs and for better players. After seeing the club fitting process and try out some of the forged cavity back irons, I started to pay some interest with the club. The master fitter asked me some questions and hand me the KZG Z0 Blade with a a regular steel shaft. He said " these head are forged in Japan ,same place as the Mizuno . It feels like butter and you will love it " I was wondering what the hell is the buttery feel and was skeptical that I can hit well smaller head and a blade. I went to the range to try out the blade and immediately fell in love with it . I was fitted with riffle 5.5 , 3 iron to P ( John recommended 6.0 , but being a weekend golfer , I want to take half a step back so that I don't want to strain myself when playing shaft that too stiff for me ). I just love the set and my shot improve both in accuracy and workability . My handicap dropped and starts to break 80 . I have also tried other blade from Titleist , TM etc, only Mizuno MP 67 come close to the buttery feel on my KZG. I look for the same set on eBay as my backup and almost get an identical KZG set , same shaft length , but lighter NS Pro 970 Stiff , Forged Cavity II head from 3 iron to 5 iron , KZG Blade Z0 from 6 iron to P. If you ask me what will be my next blade set ? It will be some Japanese Forged Blade, old fashion , simple ..something like Miura !

I played with blades for many years.  Had a set of Hogan Apex PCs (sweet spot the size of the tip of your pinky) and then bought a set of Hogan Apex muscle backs in 92.  I DO believe they made me a better ball striker by sheer force of habit.  They stung like the dickens on a mishit but there is nothing sweeter on a pure shot than a true forged blade.

I finally bought new irons when I started playing regularly again this spring, Callaway Diablo Forged.  They are a players cavity back with exceptional feel, and they set up just like a blade with a nice top line.  Definitely more forgiveness than the Apex, but the same wonderful feel on a good hit.

In my  bag:

 Diablo Octane Tour 9.5, 18  -  6DT 19 (3I Hybrid) -

 Diablo Forged Irons 5-PW -  Tom Watson wedges 52,56,60 - 64 (generic)

 D.A.R.T. Belly Putter

 B330-RX Balls
