Ok so these sunglases are both very popular it seems, so lets hear which has certain advantages/disadvantages compared to the other. The Oakley Flak Jacket with the G30 lenses, which are supposed to be built for golf, and I would also like to hear about the VR28 polarized lenses (or just the VR28). And the Tifosi Envy Sunglasses, which come with 3 different kind of lenses. The GT lens (Golf/tennis) for picking up ball in flight, the HC lens (high contrast) for reading greens, and the AC red lens (all conditions) which is just for all around wear.

So does anyone have any opinions about either of these glasses? Be sure to tell us what you have personally experienced, what you have heard, what you have researched, ect. Best case scenario would be someone who has worn both on the course, and/or experienced the lenses. But it doesn't have to be all of them. If you have just tried the VR28 lenses, tell us what you think. If you have just the g30 lenses, or just one of the frames, or any of the tifosi lenses, feel free to post.

I got mine last summer, just with the plain black lens. I love them.

I own the VR28 Black Iridium Polarized and the G30 lenses.  To me the VR28 is a great all around lense for everthing including golf.  It is a little dark to me on cloudy days and dusk, but perfect for bright sunny days and I look awesome wearing them.  Ive only had the G30 lense for 2 weeks and from what I can tell its basically the same as the VR28 except lighter.  I can wear the G30 lense indoors, cloudy conditions, and dusk and not have to worry about it being too dark.  In sunny bright conditions i miss the VR28 lense a little.  As far as golf, i feel that the G30 is the better lense, but the VR28s are awesome too.

Also, I love how crisp everything looks out of my Oakleys, they put my regular specs to shame. Good luck on your decision.

I too, have not tried the Tifosi but swear by the Oakley's.  I've been wearing the Oakley G30 lens ever since they came out with them.

Oh, and if anyone has had any experience or any knowledge about this; what is the difference between irridium and polarized? They both claim to cancel out glare, so is there any difference?

Iridium is the shiny coating on the outside that makes it so you cant see the eyes aswell from the outside. I think, but you can google the heck of it and find all sorts of sites about it.

I've had both Tifosis and the Oakley Flak Jackets. In my opinion, Oakley is the way to go, the G30 lens is awesome. I also have the polarized black lenses that go with my Oakleys for sunnier days. The G30 lens works great in any weather, I will often wear them when driving on cloudy days, because they brighten things up a bit. When it is real sunny out I switch to the Polarized Black lenses because they make things quite a bit darker than the G30 Lens. I had the Tifosis a couple of years ago, I forget which frame I had. I had multiple lenses one of which was golf specific, a general purpose lens and another lens that I don't think I ever used. I was very happy with this pair of sunglasses, but unfortunately left them in a cart while on vacation.

If you can't justify spending the money on Oakley's then Tifosi is a great alternative. You could get multiple pairs of the Tifosis for the price of the Oakleys, but the Oakleys in my opinion are a better pair of sunglasses.

With regards to the Polarized vs. Iridium, definitely get polarized lenses. The iridium will stop glare with the reflective coating on the lens, but the polarized lenses will do a better job at stopping the glare. When I got my polarized black lenses for my Oakleys, I was told that the polarized help reduce eye strain due to the way they block the suns glare off object (salesmen's pitch, maybe).

Between the two I'd go with the Flak Jacket, but you might also want to take a look at Kaenon sunglasses.  Many people claim their lens quality is better.  The G12 and C28 seem to be the lenses they suggest for golf.

I'm not sure if this will influence your decision, but when Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer, his French Cycling team dropped him.  He had no insurance.  The President of Oakley called the company's insurance carrier and asked that they put Lance on as an employee.  The insurance company refused.  The President of Oakley told them to accept Lance or lose Oakley as a customer.  The insurance company agreed.

I have had prescription M-frames for many years and they are still going strong.  I have the G30 lens and they are very good at picking up contrast.

It takes me a ridiculous amount of time to pick out prescription frames, and usually end up paying through the nose because I am picky.  I usually end up with Armani or the like, but last month I saw a pair of Oakley Transistors on display.  Best money I have spent on glasses, ever.  So light and comfortable.  Did I mention they were light?  Unfortunately, they had nothing in a polarized clip-on available.

Those flak Jackets look sharp!

http://www.rudyprojectusa.com/ Rudy Projects is superior to Oakley. For casual outdoors such as going to the beach, watching golf as a spectator, sailing or just driving, polarized lens are great. But for playing golf, sailing competition or any sports, you don't want polarized lens. UV is a must. Polarized lens don't allow you to see the grass blades direction as easily or the wave directions ( for sailing). These glasses from add in Italy are simply awesome. You can get with prescriptions as well.

I think when it comes to eyewear,  the superiority is in the eye of the beholder.

The Rudy prescription lenses are ridiculously overpriced.  I was quoted $399 just for the lenses, over and above the frame cost.  They also claim that the add on prescription lenses (clip to inside of sunglasses) is a cheaper route than the full on prescription shaded lenses, but they came out being $70 more....

Nice looking though.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have Oakley half jackets with the V30, Black Iridium, and Blue Iridium lenses all in polarized and the V30 are the best I have ever found for golf. The contrast is outstanding! The black iridium is great for those extremely sunny days. the blue is great for fishing I have found but are also great for golf, just not as good at the other two. I would recommend Oakley to anyone.
