I get so tired of some of the most boring ass, repetitive questions reporters ask players, but especially Tiger. One day I want a player to just reply "you guys ask me the same question after every tournament, or everytime...and I give the same answer...why do you think its going to be different"

It's like they are expecting an answer like these:

"Tiger, you just won...how does the win make you feel?"

"Glad you asked...I feel like crap, you know...I hit the ball great, but I didn't want to win"

"Tiger, what do you think of Rory?"

"Oh, I think he is an as*hole...he will never compare to me and I think he is going to fail in the coming years"

"Tiger, do you think you will ever regain the dominance you once had"

"oh not at all, I mean have you seen my life and what I have gone through....my game is going down the toilet..I just squeek in a few good rounds here or there..but you need to focus your attention on Rory...I am done for"

I want to punch them all in the face for their stupidity!

That's one part of the celebrity/athlete life that I do not envy.  And it's not just that they get a lot of dumb questions, but that they get the same ones constantly.  It's no wonder some of them flip out and snap every once in awhile.  Bobby Knight and Bill Parcells were good for a few of those every season.

FWIW, I think Tiger has done a good job with these kinds of questions for the most part. Her has perfected the one-word-with-a-smile answer.

'Tiger, do you ever doubt whether you will be #1 again?'

"No." (smile)

"Tiger, what's your goal this week?"

"Win." (smile)

"What did the Bay Hill win mean to you?"

"72." (smile)

Since you really can't not answer their inane questions without coming off like a horse's ass, he does the next best thing. One step above monosyllabic grunts.

I love it...and your right.I know the media hates his answers, but I have no issue with them.

He can't win. If he gives the same answers to the same questions, he's robotic and canned. If he gives a different answer, he's inconsistent at best, or else he was lying. I saw this as recently as last week. Can't remember where, but some reporter wrote an article about how he thought Tiger was finally being human when he said he felt "pure joy" after winning Bay Hill, but then he noticed that he gave the same answer to several reporters who asked him that, and concluded than he was being phony.

The players that do give non-robot answers eventually say something that gets taken the wrong way and then they get hammered by the media - see P Casey - "Properly Hate" and I Poulter - Number 2 in the world comments, so they give up.

The old Poulter would definitely have had something to say about the allegations in the Haney book.

Exactly.

Someone interviews McIlroy (or someone else) and in a 20 minute discussion he mentions that at the moment (14 months a go) it was posible to beat Tiger. THat would be in response to a question like. "At the moment, with Tiger in the condition he's in, do the players feel more confident?" McIlroy says that at his best, Tiger is close to unbeatable, but that ATM, yes, players feel like they have a good chance.

Immediately, threads open up where he ( or someone who does something similar) is accused of saying that Tiger is very beatable and that he is an upstart, arrogant or cocky.

Players who do try to give decent and honest answers are attacked, so they have all realised that lest their comments be taken out of context, it's best to geive 'em what they want.

There is an interesting interview with Player on the Matsers website. It goes for about 30 minutes. He's very open and honest. He goes on tangents, rarely answering the questions, but what he does say is very interesting.

INTERVIEW TRANSLATOR:

Question: Who do you think has the best chance of winning this week?

Answer: There are several players I could name, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Don't want to jinx anyone!

Question: What about Tiger?

Answer:He has a chance,as he does every time he tees it up, and is probably favourite, but there are lots of guys playing well at the moment. And you have to remember that Tiger is still recovering from surgery.

Translated to......

HEADLINE: CONFIDENT Player X says TIGER UNLIKELY TO CONTEND THIS WEEK

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I agree that these are good answers, but the ones listed by majorchamp would be a lot more satisfying to hear.

Come on guys. Reporters are like parasites and will suck any living thing. That's their job.  But generally sports reporters don't preach near as much hate as political reporters so to me are a fraction more respectable.

I'm not in the media, but IMHO, you are being a tad bit over critical of the media.  There are only so many questions you can ask of a golfer or any athlete for that matter.  What do you want them to ask, "What is your opinion of cold fusion?", do we even care if they have one!  One of my college buddies is a sports reporter, he said there is nothing worse than having to interview an athlete after an event, they really have no interest in being interviewed.  So regardless of the question that is asked of them, they will probably be curt with the interviewer, you can see how much better they interview before the tournament starts as opposed to during the tournament.

The whole concept is rather inane. We respect athletes for what they do, not what they say. But yet, that's what a sports reporter has to get out of them.

Only Jim Gray, who we haven't seen for a long time, and Jimmy Roberts, who launches into a one-minute monologue before he finally gets around to the question.

Also: Reporters who ask the question, ask it again in a different way, say how things seem to them, and ask the question a third time. Reporters, basically, who won't shut up. Air time is precious, and I want it to be used for us to hear what the person being interviewed has to say, not the interviewer.

A few years ago I saw a British reporter interview the winner of an ET golf tournament in the Middle East. He asked five questions that were focused, relevant, and weren't more than about ten words each. He asked his the question and got out of the way so we can hear the answer. Brilliantly done.

If memory serves, he disappeared from the Golf Channel shortly after he called Corey Pavin a liar about guaranteeing a Captain's Pick for Tiger.
