I use both in the sense that I have a 3 wood, but I also have an 18* and a 21* hybrid. For me, hybrids are easier to hit since you can just swing them like an iron, rather than needing a more sweeping motion.

Hybrids are just majestic. I hit mine so well. Fairway woods seem strange.. no idea how u all hit those things off a flat surface. Like a driver without a tee. I'm sure destroy the ground around me or slice away.

As shown in my signature line, both. While they can certainly overlap, they're different clubs suited for different situations.

How? Seem to do the same thing.

I hit my hybrids much higher and they land much softer than a fairway wood. They're easier to hit off iffy lies and from the rough due to the smaller head profile too. My 3 wood is generally reserved for hitting off the deck in the fairway where my goal is overall distance. It tends to run out more than a hybrid. I'll use either off the tee, but again the hybrid lands very soft while the 3 wood is more boring and can be counted on to run out a bit, so which I use is situational dependent.

All things being equal, a hybrid should fly higher and rollout less than its corresponding fairway wood -- by design.

My 5-wood and 3-hybrid go about the same distance. The 5-wood does have the opportunity to rollout a bit more and therefore is often the choice off the tee if I want 210-235. Carry over water 200? I pull the hybrid.

Both.  I use a 3-wood and a 3-hybrid.  For me, I find a hybrid easier to control but I dont swing fast enough to get a 2H up in the air enough, so I prefer the longer shaft of the 3-wood.  So, thats why I carry a 3-wood and a 3-hybrid.

I used to carry both a 3-hybrid (18 deg) and a 5W but now that I've figured out how to hit the 3-h (like a long iron, basically) I've dropped the 5W for a LW.  I seem to be quite consistent with the 3-h these days and it's the more versatile club.   Good for second shots on a par 5, shots from light to moderate rough, and long par 3's.  I also carry a 3W, which I'd use more often off the tee if I had any sense - I almost never use it off the deck so I voted 3-h in the poll.

I too carry a 3W, 5W, 4H, I replaced the 3 iron with the hybrid, I thought I was the last hold out to replace long irons with a hybrid!  I made the switch, not because I can't hit long irons, but because I couldn't find a hybrid I liked.  I had tried several different ones, but found the only one I like in a Taylormade Raylor.  I made the switch when I hit my brother's raylor and found it is easier to hit out of the rough than a long iron, so I'm now a convert.

I put away my 3 wood recently.  I have a 3+ Nickent Utility Club that hits like a 4 wood with the same loft as my 3 wood, and a 5 hybrid that hits like a 4 iron but with higher flight and a more controllable landing. With a good lie I've hit my driver off of the deck a few times with some success from 220+, which I couldn't have reached with my 3 wood anyway.  I just like the carry and ball flight that I get with a well-hit hybrid.

I have a 3-wood but only use when I can tee it up.

I've been going back and forth lately, but currently I don't carry a fairway club.  I have 16*, 21*, and a 24* hybrids in the bag.  Been going back and forth between the 16* 2 hybrid and a 16.5* 4 wood.  This particular fairway is the one I've hit the best, but the 2 hybrid is sooooooo very easy to hit.

I'm going to bend a 56* wedge to 54*, drop the gap wedge, and put an 18* hybrid in to try too, along with trying out a 4 iron in place of the 24* hybrid.

It depends on what hybrid model you're using.  Some hybrids have wide soles and are basically the same as a fairway wood.  Others are more like irons.  Likewise, some fairway woods today are so shallow-faced that they don't really resemble woods, and they launch the ball extremely high.

I play a Titleist 910F fairway wood and Adams Idea Pro A12 hybrids.  The 910F is a fairway wood:  I can hit it off the tee, or off of the fairway.  I can hit it from the rough only if I have a very good lie.  I wouldn't think off hitting it from a bunker.  It's tough to hit it really high from the turf.  It's easy to draw it off the tee.  The A12 Pro hybrids are more like a long iron than a wood--but a very forgiving long iron with a hot face and low COG.  I can hit them high, low, draw, or fade.  I can hit them out of the rough (from a reasonable lie).  They're much more accurate, and I can control the shape much better, than a FW wood, but they don't go as far.

You can buy hybrids and woods that are basically the same club.  But you can also buy models that are very different and serve very different purposes.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
