I've been Playing Golf for: 13 years

My current handicap index or average score is: PRO

My typical ball flight is: Now a FADE

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: I ABHOR hooking it, and missing left.

Videos:

This is my swing in April I think.Β  I was playing pretty well and still in Florida working with Mario.Β  Unfortunately I don't have any recent FO slow mo swings, so this will have to do.

Here is the rest of my swing evolution, in chronological order.Β  Although I have known Mario for the entirety of these swings, I will note exactly when we began working together.

Here is my swing November 2007 (FO & DTL):

Here's what I had to work with right when we started in October 2010:

This is basically how we fixed it:

This is after the one week bootcamp with Mario (October 2010):

For those that might not be able to spot the differences, check out these two pics.

Liam, what was the feel to help you change the takeaway like this?

Here's a recent FO view

Love both the function and the look of your swing. It's one of my favorite swings to look at when trying to understand commonalities among good players.

So you fade everything?

Push-fade with everything except driver?

I fade everything, including driver.Β  My misses come when i get lazy and my right shoulder hangs back, and doesn't drive through impact.

MV, nice illustrations!Β  I was able to change that part in my moveaway by understanding how the hands hinge in the swing.Β Β  In 2010 Mario and I worked on maintaining my left arm connection, and minimizing my forearm rotation.Β  Through many chats, I came to understand that the bow/cup in the left wrist never changes in the swing.Β  These pieces, (maintaining wrist flexion, maintaining left arm/torso connection, and no forearm rotation), got the club more on plane.

Sorry, when I meant "fade everything except driver" I was implying that your driver was a pull-fade and not a push-fade.

What kind of fade is it that you play?

Great changes BTW.

"Minimizing forearm rotation." You mean both on the takeaway and the follow-through right? Slower rate of closure, and more "ricky fowler/charlie wie" on the backswing?

Well I try to play a straight fade or pull fade I guess, but my miss is a push fade.

Minimize forearm rotation for the entire swing yes.Β  Doing so on the backswing, allows the clubface to come into the ball more more squarely.Β  With slower clubface closer, my misses are much better.

Hopefully Mario can chime in and explain better, as my technical explanations aren't as in depth.Β  But, the left wrist controls the clubface, if it bows the clubface shuts, if it cups the clubface opens.

In 2010. I was pushing the club away from me, losing my left arm connection.Β  I would then bow my wrist to get the club back inside, and thus the face would shut.Β  From there, I would have to swing the club out away from me into impact (which is the only way I could get the clubface more open).Β  I would hit pushes and draws, and overhooks when I wasn't timed well.Β  My clubface closure was astronomical.

Nice description. Β Basically putting in all the pieces so that club head/ shaft could load more efficiently and neutralize the swing direction.

This sounds like some of the issues I battle with in my swing.

Liam,

Thanks for the videos. You mentionedΒ maintaining wrist flexion. What do you mean by that? By flexion, I would guess it's not cocking/uncocking. Is it keeping the wrist from bowing too much?

Steve

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Precisely! As the wrists cock/uncock, hinge/unhinge, the amount of bow or cup cannot change or the clubface angle changes. It took some diligent and deliberate practice to understand what this looks and feels like.

Any videos that helped you nail this? Β I'd be interested in seeing them.

Thanks for the videos!

When you practiced this, how did you gauge how well you are doing? What kind of ball flight were you looking for? Less curvature? Do you pay attention to height on 1/2 shots?

    • We do not buy extended warranties. We will use one of our credit cards for the purchase that extends the warranty "x 2". Our thoughts are: a. if the item is a lemon, it will likely break right away and we can attempt to apply the original warranty or credit card extension. b. over the long haul, we will probably save more money by not purchasing the extended warranty and fixing/junking broken items out of our own pocket. The important thing is to keep some records of purchases so one may make a claim under the manufacturer's warranty. I recently sent back some Footjoy shoes for leaking and Footjoy did a reat job of making the claim process work very well. I had the original receipt, warrant info and box. Easy peasy.
