Any old RPG player's out there. No computers, old school pencils and dice...

I started with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which, believe it or not, started as an ultra violent RPG game (may have been graphic novels first) long before the pizza eating clowns on the cartoon show. I then graduated to D&D; and AD&D.; I also really enjoyed the game Rifts by Palladium. Awesome times, we would have 6-8 hour marathon sessions, heck I would spend hours just working on my character. One of my good buddies was an excellent DM/GM, he would write and create all his own stuff complete with maps and everything. I miss those days and even scrounged up an old AD&D; Player's Manual in the hopes that my sons would play with me when they get older. Sadly I think that ship has sailed and by the time they are old enough to play they will just give me a blank stare when I try to explain that it's all done with dice and pencils....sigh.

My favorite Character I ever created was Taliah Menzbane, a human hating Elf from the Silvan forest. He would patrol the forest and execute humans who entered. Reincarnated him many times over the years. We were using the AD&D; system called Birthright which had lots of cool rules for running political structures and even some great rules for large scale battles involving whole armies. Added a whole other element to D&D; that was never really accommodated in the original material.

My brother was big into D&D;, and War Hammer.  He had tons of figures and would paint his armies, etc.  I never got into it... I played D&D; a few times, but for whatever reason really never got into playing.  I was more of the go outside and do something kind of kid.  Or if I was inside, would hunker down and play Commodore 64, Nitendo, etc...Or go through my endless baseball/football card and comic book collections.

I was a D&D; nerd from way back.  My father read "The Hobbit" to my brother and me when I was about 5, and I was hooked from then on.  I still ready epic fantasy as a favored book genre, "A Song of Ice and Fire" being the best of what I've seen in my 39+ years (LOTR excepted, but not by much).

Wasn't much of a fantasy/ role playing game kind of kid ... everything centered around sports for me.  The closest I can come is an old game (that was even old when I was a kid) where we played baseball with pencils and dice ...

I still have it too.  I think it's been around since the 50's or 60's (my version is from 1986) and they might still make it.

I know it's not the same thing, but it's all I got. :)

Have you read "the wheel of time" by Robert Jordan? That is the BOMB my friend. EPIC isn't even a big enough word to convey its EPIC-NESS.

Wow!  I've played the old versions of this before.  I think we found it in my grandparents' basement years ago.  It was from my father's childhood.

I was SEMI-involved in D&D;, as my neighbor at the time was OBSESSED with it.  I thought the books were very cool graphically, with amazing dragons and mythological creatures; I think I just liked the artistry of it.  My Mom bought me one or two of the starter books.  I enjoyed playing, but I could not hang with the "big dogs" because I could not sit at a table for the periods of time these guys would. I can remember 6,8,10 hours on a Saturday or Sunday.  I would get kind of bored.

I'd have to go outside and play either stoop ball, regular or stoop ball baseball, sewer cap wiffle ball with an electrical taped up ball, or scully. My D&D; experience was very short lived, but I did enjoy it for the short time I played, probably around 3 months.

I liked it better to be outdoors doing something,........anything !

How do you think I got my username? A CHAladin who had a tendency to roll nothing but 20s whenever anything important happened, caused our DM ulcers with all his shenanigans, and was damn near impossible to harm was named Lucius Wooding. Some of his notable exploits include preventing the suicide of a character who was intended by the DM to die by quick drawing a whip and going Indiana Jones on his ankle over a cliff, doing triple digit damage with lances, jumping off a cliff into the sea and doing CPR underwater to a drowning party member, while wearing full plate mind you, since he had been saving a breath of air for months for this very purpose since he came back to life as basically a good aligned undead and never needed to breathe again. Plus the very monsters that killed him in the first place, which were boss monsters that were almost impossible to fight, became incapable of hitting him once he came back to life and none of their other abilities worked either. Pretty broken build against those kinds of enemies, actually. 3.5 is my preferred ruleset, though.

I did not realize there were other WOT lovers on this forum but I guess I should not be surprised. I will second what Ernest Jones has said. On topic, I never did play any old school RPG type games. We had an Atari and then Nintendo so it was all electronic for me.

Used to play something similar in the late 80s called *replay baseball* - it was a bit more realistic than strat-o-matic.

It was our version of fantasy baseball - 6 guys, we drafted from 8 AL teams (anyone that was on one of those 8 teams at the end of the season was available in the next years draft). It was a keeper league with 25 active, 5 in the minors and 2 *frozen* players that you could keep for the next year.

We played 12 six game series a year and had a world series trophy that the winner kept for a year. Every spring, everyone would go running to whoever got their cards for the year first to see how the matchups would work.

When replay finally wen out of business, we switched to strat-o-matic and the league folded about a year later.

Have you read the final novel, A Memory of Light, yet? I made it all the way up to A Crown of Swords before losing touch with the series for years, just couldn't take 2 year waits between each novel.

Two years ago I started them again from the beginning and have now read everything but A Memory of Light . I'm having a hard time with starting the last novel, I mean this series of books has been in and out of my life for going on 23 years and at one point I thought I'd never finish it. It will feel weird reading the final sentence! Maybe I'll spontaneously combust or something.

I'm actually having a very similar experience. After getting the last book I decided to do a full read through the entire series first. I probably have at least a couple of months before I get to the last book. On the one hand, I really want to know what happens and othe other hand I sort of don't want it to end...

Yeah exactly. The whole idea of finishing it is fraught with nostalgia. When I restarted, the first book, Eye of the World wasn't in the library so I started at The Great Hunt , maybe I need to restart at the very beginning again to buy some time. Lol.
