Hello,

I just started getting serious about Golf again, haven't played a ton since highschool, and I joined so I could learn as much as I could and just read about golf. Right Now I'm roughly an 20 handicap but improving quickly. Before I stopped playing in Highschool I was about a 15/16 and want to be better than that. I am 23 years old so I haven't had too long of a gap and its all coming back to me. I'm currently looking to purchase a few new wedges as I have never bought a dedicated 52/56/60 wedges and after using a friends I saw they could help me out drastically, any advice on what to check out is welcome. I am actually probably a better teachers as its pretty easy for me to pick out nuances in peoples swings and try to help them correct them. Looking forward to learning a lot more and helping out when I can.

So would it be Bakersfield all the way up to the Northern California border vs. SoCal? I think that's fair...

Or you guys can just join our group!  We already got Brandon, and he's from Sacramento.  Heck, if we chopped Cali in half, you are awfully close to being in our half already, so join up!!!

Or wait till the Norcal-ers get a little better organized and start a group and join them.  When they have a tourney, I'll stop by and pick you up on the way!

I'm surprised there aren't more Northern California golfers on the forums. There are always tons of people at the course any given day of the week.

As for wedges thank you for the link. I just got back from sport chalet and hit a few clubs there but you can only tell so much. I checked out the new Cleveland 588 RTX and it was great (of course) a Taylor Made, Nike, and a Callaway Forged that I really liked. Unfortunately I didn't get the names of the TM or Nike because I was not impressed by them at all. I will be heading to Haggin Oaks to get a better selection to choose from.

I agree, those people South of the grapevine think they are better than all the rest of us.

I could join your group but not sure if I want to drive 4-7 hours to play a round of golf.  What we could do is make a NorCal group, and battle the SoCal group in a yearly 2 day event and see who represents Cali better.  Giants vs. Dodgers...Giants, 49ers vs. Chargers...49ers, Pebble Beach vs. Torrey Pines...Pebble Beach.  I think we got you guys beat in almost every category.

I don't know about that.  Giants vs. Padres (even in the win column), Chargers vs. Raiders (should I bother?), Spanish Bay vs. Pelican Hill (Pelican Hill)  See what I did there?

But yes, I think expanding our little group outings into bigger outings is a great idea.  I would be all for a norcal v. socal weekend get together at Santa Barbara, or Carmel, or wherever.  Play a two round ryder cup style event or something?  That would be awesome!

Ryder Cup idea sounds awesome.  Lets get on this idea and make it happen.

Hello, there.  I am from Northern California, Bay Area to be specific.  How's golf in Sacramento?   The courses seem to be a lot more affordable but are they good?

      I'm pretty good at picking targets with mid/long irons in hand, but yes lately I have been getting more aggressive than I should be, especially from 100-150. The 50-100 deficiency is mainly distance control, working on that mechanically with Evolvr, but the 100-150 is definitely a result of poor targets.  6,7,8 iron in my hand I have no problem aiming away from trouble/the flag, hitting a very committed shot to my target, but give me PW, GW, and some reason I think I need to go right at it (even though I know I shouldn't). Like here from my last round. 175 left on a short par 5 to a back right flag. Water short right and bunker long. Perfectly fine lie in sparse rough, between the jumper and downwind playing for about 10yds of help. I knew to not aim at the flag here, aimed 40 feet left of it, hit my 165 shot exactly where I was looking, easy 2 putt birdie.   But then there's this one. I had 120 left from the fairway to a semi-tucked front left flag. Not a ton of trouble around the green but the left and back rough does fall off steeper than short/right rough. For some reason I aimed right at this flag with my 120yd shot, hit it the exact proper distance but pulled it 5yds left and had a tough short sided chip. Did all I could to chip it to 8 feet and missed the putt for a bad bogey. Had I aimed directly at the middle of the green maybe 5yds right of the flag, a perfectly straight shot leaves me 20 feet tops for birdie and that same pulled shot that I hit would have left me very close to the hole.    So yeah I think the 50-100 is distance control and the 100-150 is absolutely picking better targets. I have good feels and am strong with distance control on those I just need to allow for a bigger dispersion.    This view is helpful. For the Under 25yds my proximity is almost double from the rough vs the fairway which reinforces that biggest weakness right now being inside 25yds from the rough. But then interestingly enough in the 25-50yds I'm almost equal proximity from fairway and rough, so it looks like I need to work on under 25yds from the rough and then 25-50 from the fairway.   Thanks as always for the insight, it's been helpful. I'm really liking ShotScope so far.
