My buddy has cameras all around his house. Check out this lightning strike that he caught on video yesterday. Turn your sound up so you can hear the hit and watch the tree in the left corner of the video

Holy crap! That's pretty cool to see up close like that. Also, I don't know if he was home... but if he was, I bet that scared the bejesus out of him!

Was he watching when it happened?

The closest I have ever been is in a car about 100 feet from the Welcome to Massachusetts sign on I-93S.  The bolt hit, we all jumped except my friend who was driving.  He was so calm.  Professional drummers don't get rattled by loud noises.

No, he wasn't home.  He came home and saw the tree destroyed and went inside and watched the video to see if the cameras caught it.   He said he knew it was a lightning strike but he never imagined it would be that explosive.

Similar thing happened to me years ago when going to the beach. Only the bolt of lightning struck the ground just a few feet in front of our car. It scared the heck out of all of us. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard. I was afraid to touch anything metal in the car.
