Well I'm up late and thought i would share with everyone how i fill out my scorecard so maybe others who are trying to improve can maybe try this out. Maybe everyone already does it, but i'll throw it out there. so this year i really want to focus on improvement so i am writing nearly every detail on my scorecard. The fields i write in are:

Score:

+/-: How i did compared to par

Fairway: Hit or Miss (Left or Right)

Greens: Hit or Miss (Left, Right, Over, or Short)

Putts:

Club: Tee and Approach

I fill my card out this way so that i can track which club(s) i have issues with for the round so that i can practice with just those clubs the next time i hit the range. I have found that this has knocked around 6 strokes off my round on average. i hope this can help people get their game a little better. otherwise this is my rant and i hope you enjoyed haha

I don't do it yet, but I think one good extra stat to throw in there - I know a lot of guys on here do this already - is distance of first putt. You might think you're a bad putter, but it turns out you're just leaving yourself too far from the hole when you get on the green.

I basically do the same.  For +/-  I record the accumulative number for the round to that point.  For the fairway box I write the distance I am from the green - and circle it if I had hit the fairway.  Easy to see the # of fairways  hit and can figure out how long my drive was.  For # of putts, I circle the number if I had hit the green in regulation.  It's always interesting to me to go over my round at the 19th hole.

In each box I write.......a number. At the end, I add 'em all up. I do tend to keep track of GIR in my head. That's really the big key for me. Anything else is just noise to me, and I already have too much noise going on inside my head. :-)

I mark it as suggested by Stan Utley, similar to the OP but G or GIR, SS, sand save, U up and down and the first putt distance.  This can go directly into Scorecard.  I do, at times, mark the distance of my approach shots too.

I like some others on here right in a number (+/- Par) and that's about it.  While I think it's great to keep all those extra stats (and would love to so I can see where I need to improve beyond what I plainly see) I don't see where on the cards at my courses I can keep that info.

I use two boxes on the score card and keep track of the following:

The first box has my score and in the top right corner a small arrow indicating if I hit the fairway (up) or missed it left or right. In the bottom right corner of the same box is the number of putts for the hole.

In the second box I record if I hit the green by writing a "G" and if I missed the green I'll write either "UD" or "SS" if I have an opportunity for an up and down or sand save. If I'm successful I circle the "UD" or "SS," if not, I cross it out. In the bottom right corner of the same box, I write the distance of my first putt.

When I'm done with the round I plug all that info into Scorecard and get back a ton of stats (click on "My Scorecards" in my signature to see what I mean).

The whole card:  each line

1 - score

2 - Tee off club, and Fairway hit (dot in the upper corner for left/right/middle)

3 - GIR (check or x)

4 - Putts

5 - etc (S for sand, P for penalty, etc etc,, or even a comment)

6 - penalty strokes (hopefully this line stays blank)
