My local Muni which is actually a nice course, is technically closed on Christmas Day but for years it's been an unwritten rule that if you don't mind walking, you can go out and play all you want for free. The great thing about it is the only people who play are actually golfers, meaning you don't get Uncle Fred from out if town who only plays once a year, out there hacking it around and tearing up the course. Just curios as to whether anybody else has a course around them that does this?

Not near me, no.

Some people will do this in the spring before a course opens, or when we have an oddly weird warm day (I played one year on January 1, as it was 60° somehow), but it's obviously important to make sure it's actually an unwritten rule and not just trespassing. :)

Lol, no trespassing, this has been going on for years. It's nice that it's mostly true golfers because there's never any issues. People pair up, wait in line and just have a good relaxing day.

For many years the city would close their two courses in early to mid-November.  The "championship" course has a chain link fence that pretty much discourages anyone from using it but the smaller layout (5,000 yards, par 67) is right in the middle of town, unfenced and used for sledding and cross country skiing when snow covered.

So, each November, once the course closed and before there was any snow, we would all play the layout for free.  The course conveniently left holes cut in the greens and over the first couple days we would place sticks and branches in the holes to mark where they were.  There were times when the parking lot was filled to capacity.

Eventually the city figured out they were missing out on a potential revenue source so about 5 years ago they started keeping the clubhouse open and collect greens fees 12 months a year, weather permitting.

I'm thinking many of the courses I've played, when I lived in Maine, would've thought it was trespassing.  Although I do remember playing one year on the local private course that was closed for the winter, on a balmy December Day about 30 years ago and didn't think anything of it, but that was probably trespassing, but no one said anything.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • Hence your Avatar!😜 I drink a lot of water during the day if I’m playing or exercising. I get cramps otherwise.
    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
