If you were to pickup a regional Golf magazine to read what would keep you interested in reading it?

Here are a few of my thoughts...

I'd want it to cover on a regular basic a few things....

Instruction - Have a solid instruction editor with a  strong pedigree to help the average player, with high quality photos

Course/Travel Review - A monthly review of a course/getaway, could be a buddy trip or a weekend trip that couples including golfers and non-golfers would enjoy. Lifestyle not "just" golf.

Rules - One page that had something to do with the rules of golf

Newcomer - a section dedicated to introducing the game to new players including etiquette, equipment, what to wear, instruction, best place to play

Dining - Where is a great place to go for a great meal after a round or just a date  night

Profile - Regional/State based story on someone who is connected to the game. Can vary from issue to issue on a PGA Tour Player, PGA Caddie, Old Timer who has seen it all, soccer mom who squeezes in 9 holes with friends weekly, a group of 4 kids who love to play together, etc..

Equipment reviews

Not really interest in all the obscure coverage of regional tournaments....

I can get a lot of that from the National magazines.

I'd want it devoted to the local area.  Courses, dining, tournaments, spotlight on local instructors and their teaching philosophy, local players and their accomplishments on the national/international scene, etc...

The magazine I get from Scga is similar to what is described. Except I enjoy reading about the local tournaments as well.

We have a local mag in Dallas called Avid Golfer. It's pretty good and as far as I know, very popular. Local course reviews, local golfers profiled and their most popular feature, Cart Girl of the Month. They roll that up to Cart Girl of the Year. I've only seen 2 or 3 of the girls selected, generally VERY hot. One of the questions asked of them every time is what is the oldest man you'd ever date, usually they come back with "28" or something. Pretty depressing.

May want to look at your local golf association site. The CGA keeps us well informed. Everything from tournament results to instruction to local course reviews. Pretty much every big market has the Avid Golfer magazine but IMO only good for vacation type info. Here everything featured is at the high end and many are mountain courses you can't just hop in a car and get to without making a weekend out of it.

Very familiar with AVID...I'm curious how many readers are turned off with the Cart Girl of the Monty/Year part. Seems to really make the publication less family friendly, more towards the 18-35 crowd... although they do seem to have a pretty solid advertising base.

I'm definitely feeling the need for local/regional take. With local writers, photography, stories, teachers, etc...
