Assuming I have two fairly solidly struck golf shots, I can get there in two strokes.

Pretend your on a par 5 540 yards to pin.

With two well done strokes I can reach almost any par five in two. Problem is of course, making two good strokes. Usually I'd be 30-50 yards away and probably off to the side.

My usual Driver + 3-Wood totals to about 390 yards for me. There are par-4s I can't reach in two, much less par-5s. This gives me about 130 yards left on a 520-yard par-5, which is about a 6-iron (despite clubs mentioned in the poll). This is why I love the 475-yard par-5 at a course I play: I can reasonably expect a wedge into the green after good shots of driver-hybrid or driver-3-wood.

Put it this way; it's not a great question, for many reasons, but the most obvious answer is course management. Maybe I don't want to attempt a long 3-wood shot into a green. What is surrounding the green? Any slope of the green? Pin location?

I'd layup to about 110yds, my smooth PW length.

I agree with Spectrums. Course management plays a big part in this one. I voted 121-145.

For me on average I would probably be 230 off the tee leaving 310 to the green. I would love to be 80 yards out for my third shot but I don't have a 230 game from the fairway right now. With 310 left I would hit my 170 club to give me a 140 shot to the green. Both shots I would be confident with. Anything longer than 170 from the fairway and I need to rethink or just take a chance.

If I get lucky and hit a 250 off the tee, which I do at times, then I would have 290 to the green. I might hit 160/130 for my next two shots giving me a better chance at making that second shot solid to set myself up for that third one to the green.

If the fairway is wide and the approach to the green is open I might try a hybrid from the fairway (which I'm inconsistent with at the moment) and see if I can get inside 130. Anything between 130 and 80 would put me in a good position for a solid shot at the pin.

540? On a normal day i'll hit that no problem, smooth drive and 3w and ill be there.

Then its just a matter if it stays on the green and how far from the pin it is;).

But I usually lay up on par 5s. Make more birdies personally from say 105 than I will from any weird yardage around greens either way. At 105 I have a perfect punch sw that I can throw darts with.

I think you are over-analyzing this question man. He was simply asking if you can get there or how much would you have left in if you couldn't reach in two.

True, but my distance won't let me get there in two. Besides, I play course-management, not grip-n'-rip.

I could get there, however, I will score much better by laying up.

Well, I guess I could get there on two on a good day. However, most of the time I would probably leave myself about 130 to 140 yards away hitting a Driver then a 4 iron. However, if I had a good drive, I was hitting the ball well and there was a lot of space for mishits, I may go for it in two.

I chose 130-140 with an eight iron.

    • I get kidney stones. So 100 oz of water every day. Some nights I drink 32oz between midnight and 6 Am. Which means I dont sleep much.
    • 46 (9 over) Short game and putts were awful!
    • 46+40 for an 86. I just need to play 9 holes on the range before each round. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
