That will be interesting to see, I have a good friend who is a PGA Pro at a local club, he pulled his 3 iron to add another wedge this year. He now carries 4.

When I bought my i10 irons I dropped my 3 iron and added a lob wedge. I bought a Ping Tour W lob wedge, and like it so much, ordered a new 52˚ and 56˚ Tour W Wedge this past Friday. I'll have them in about ten days.

I have found I use the lob wedge way more than I need a three iron. The lob wedge gives me more choices around the green, and I like being able to take a full swing at it from 75-80 yards instead of hitting a three-quarter sand wedge. Makes for more options when laying up too.

I play PW 48, SW 54, LW 60. I just switched from 48, 56, 60 and occasionally have put in a GW 52. I pulled the GW because I found I could hit that shot with a 3/4 PW and it wasn't really paying off. I went with the 54 recently and it is a better loft for close chipping than the 56 was. My regular iron gaps are @ 12 yards apart and my wedges are @ 16 yards apart so the adjustments are not too difficult. With my wedges I have pretty good feel and I found with 4 wedges there were too many options for my overanalytical mind.

Now if you have a PW that is 44-45, then you probably need 4 wedges because your PW is really a nine iron (by 1980s standards). When someone has a 45-50-55-60 set-up it is out of necessity because of the modern lofts.

I dropped my 3 wood so I could have 3 wedges in the bag. I don't see the point of the 3 wood anymore when I hit my driver about 300, and my 2 iron 260 off the tee and about 240 from the fairway. Also I didn't have any confidence with the 3 wood because I rarely had need of it and hardly hit it on the course. Adding a 56 gap wedge between my 52 and 60 has really helped me on my scoring. Its nice to hit the fairway, but its more important to hit the green on your second shot and having 3 wedges that you can take full swings with to a certain distance is a very nice feeling when you are in a bit of trouble.

Aside from my PW, I carry the following:
  • 52/10
  • 56/10
  • 60/6

My PW acts like a 9 iron, so I need to carry the GW. I also needed a wedge that would be ideal for shots <70 yards. The 60/6 is perfect for that. Doesn't go any farther than 70 yards and I can get plenty of air by opening the face.

Today, the pitching wedge is a wedge in name only. The gap wedge, as we know, was born of neccessity and greed after the OEMs consented to the distance (phony) war in the 1990s.

Previously, at least a few could hit a 3-iron. The 3- became a de facto 2-iron, which even He can't hit, and people struggled with the 4-iron. The 'insightful' manufacturers then launched their attack on a second front: aiding these hapless golfers with hybrids much more expensive than their old trusty irons. All pre-planned and packaged by the suits of sunny San Diego and elsewhere. Rant over.

PW, and the following:
52/7 (100 yards)
56/6 (85-90)
60/5 (i never use this on a full shot)

Too much bounce is just a heartache for me and results in worm burners (I have a pretty shallow swing). I dropped the 5 wood to get four wedges in the bag. I'm now with driver, 3 wood, 3 iron, and so on down.

Three:

Ping Eye 2+ W (48.5*)
Mizuno MP-T Raw Haze (gap/sand, 53.08)
Mizuno MP-T Raw Haze (sand/lob, 58.10)

Sometimes I replace the 53* Mizuno with an Eye 2 +no+ sand wedge. Same loft, higher bounce.

I've tried to carry four (W, 52, 56, 60) and liked it, but since I generally find wedges to be more versatile than fairway woods/hybrids/long irons, I didn't like having just one club between driver and 3-iron.

I usually carry 4, 46, 50, 55, 60. I sometimes carry my old wedges, 47, 52, 58, and a five wood when it is cold or on a course with a lot of long par 3s and 4s.

I used to carry three but had a huge gap around 130 yards. Hence I added a gap wedge. My wedges are listed in my signature. I have the least amount of bounce available on all my wedges as I like to both pick the ball and hit that big divot spinner.

My Distances are:
PW- 140-150
GW- 120-140
SW- 100-120
Lob- inside 100

Those are approximates as the type of shot and pin placement determine the club as much as anything.

I use the PW from my iron set, I think the loft is 48. Also use a 54 and a 58, those lofts work best for my game.
