That book actually sounds interesting - I must be very bored (working from home waiting for the electrical inspector to show up and tell me what I did wrong with my basement wiring).

There's no question that in OUR game, there are a bunch of exceptions to the primary principles, but the threads of the principles are pretty consistent.  I think the 2019 revisions to the rules also were done with consistency in mind, and improved a number of things because of that.  I just don't see any really "random" rules in Golf.  Perhaps it would be an interesting thread to start, good basis for conversation, and maybe even learning.

I think the more a person understand the rules, the more they make sense in those terms.  But I wouldn't give people a hard time when they question them.  The people that question them are most like those that are in the process of learning them - exactly the people you want to encourage.  They will come around as they get deeper into it.  (in general).
