Trouble Getting Tee Times

I live on Long Island, NY and play all courses in my area, some up to 40 miles out from my house. Tee times are booked days in advance in most of the courses or the ones that are open are late in the afternoon. Pain in the rear because we never know what the weather is going to be days later, e.g., we booked days ago for tomorrow, turns out it is going to rain and thunderstorms so we had to cancel. We'll try again for next week, weekend are full.

I've only been playing Torrey Pines since the courses have reopened in California.

It seems just a little more difficult to get times.  Times become available online 7 days in advance at 7 pm exactly.  All but twilight times are gone for both courses in about 5 seconds or less.  Only difference now is it's become harder to even get a twilight time except for the pay 18 hole rate but only have enough daylight to play 9 times, 5:15 pm and after.  I like to grab a twilight time and play 12 on the North which does come back near the clubhouse. I grab a 4 pm within 1 second after they're released and have always had success.

The nice thing about this situation is you have to invest very little time or effort in the process.

No shows are not a problem at Torrey.  You do that three times and you lose your reservation privileges. In addition there is always a waiting list of walk ons.  The course seems to always be filled.  Pace of play can be a problem.

It is times like we have been having that makes me appreciate even more that I belong to a private club and own my own golf cart.  Having said that, you still have to be on the ball to get a tee time.  Best of my knowledge, we have about 1500 homes in my neighborhood and to live here you MUST be at a minimum a social member of the club.  Our normal number of rounds is around 1000 to 1500 per month.  Now, they are up to between 3000 and 4000 rounds.  Lots of those social members since they have been staying home are booking tee times and playing.  We can book tee times a week in advance so my normal group calls in at 6:30 when they start taking tee times.  For the most part, we are successful.  The last tee time they book is 5:12pm.  Some days, I go over around 5:30, check with the pro shop and tee off.  Often times there will be someone else who wants to play.  Pretty easy to get in 18 teeing off by 5:30.

Our local executive course is almost twice as busy as before Covid-19. So rounds can be slow and tedious, especially on the weekend.

Now that leagues have started, tee times at my courses cannot be made after 12:50 on weekdays. Pretty much going to have to play 36-54 holes a weekend to feel like my membership was worth it. The other 4 courses closing is really starting to put a strain on the 2 that are left.
