I am 72 with a 85 mph swing on a 7 iron currently play cobra F9 single length irons. They are OK but I tend to hit them too low. 2 questions. 1 any suggestions for a higher flight with them, ball position specifically. 2 any suggestions for a iron set that is easy to hit HIGH  I am too old to be concerned with "working" the ball

Without seeing your swing, it is hard to speculate. Ball position can help. We tend to move the ball back for better contact, but that will lower flight. I would suggest going to the range and try moving the ball forward and see what happens. You may surprise yourself and see you can hit nice iron shots with the ball just off your front heel.

For irons, any type of SGI iron will promote higher flight.

72 with an 85 MPH 7-iron swing speed?

Just double checking. If so you should be able to hit anything high.

If anything, maybe look at a shaft change? Then again, being single length irons maybe not.

I know when I want a higher ball flight, I will either move the ball slightly more forward in my stance. That, or sometimes I will adjust my stance a little more open, along with a little more open club face at impact..

What are your current 18 hole scores?

85mph 7i swing speed. I'm jealous. That type of swing speed would shave 3-4 strokes off my scores I think.

I  shoot 75 to 80. yes 85mph 7 iron is correct. I tried to play the ball further up in my stance today it helped a little but my shots still roll out too much. Shot a 74.

Then you should look at your technique not your clubs. Or both.

What clubs do you use? What shafts? So..you only swing your driver 7mph faster than your 7i? An earlier post you stated your driver SS as 92mph....Seems odd..maybe not. Just guessing here...

Irons cobra F9 1 length regular flex graphite

Driver Ping G410 sft with speeder 365 reg flex shaft typical drive is 225 with slight fade I am left handed

I try to control my driver swing so as to hit the ball straight

I am a pretty good chipping and pitching

Like @boogielicious said it would help to see your swing! I’m curious how you hit a 7i with 85mph ss but ‘low’ trajectory. Do you have a Mevo? Have you seen any data as to what your actually ball height is on your iron shots? I would think a regular flex graphite shaft would certainly cater to a higher trajectory.

I did not know what a Mevo was till I googled it so obviously I don't have one. I just judge my ball height against some young decent, scratch to 3, young guys I play with. My problem is with pins in the front when I am 145+ out. Ball hits in front and rolls to rear of green. I used to be able to get close to those pins when I could hit a 9 145. Maybe I am just too old. I still shoot the same score 76+- but front different tees.

It would be worthwhile to get some numbers. I’d be curious what your spin rate and launch angles are with your irons. If you’re hitting 6-7rpm with your 7i then the ball shouldn’t be rolling across the green I would think.

Don't Titleist Pro v1-x claim to get a greater launch angle?  And perhaps switching to a 7 hybrid could help.  85 does seem like plenty of club head speed for a 7-iron to be hearing about difficulty hitting the ball high enough.

Well it’s not just his 7i. He just let us know his 7i ss. Which I agree should be adequate to get his irons to launch the way they’re expected to assuming his ss with the other irons are appropriate.

If you are indeed generating 85 mph with a 7 iron you should be carrying a 7 iron 165-166 yards on a good strike...which is pretty far.....a 85 mph 7 iron with regular graphite shafts then you would not have any issues generally the speed to hit the ball high...if anything....... one would expect you to be hitting your 7 iron too high vs too low with regular graphite shafts.

IMO....I'd say your low iron shots are from technique and not equipment and if you're hitting to the front of the green and the ball most often ends up at the back of the green....you're likely hitting low draw/hooks with your irons.

Just how far SHOULD you be hitting your 7 iron?

No, it's not.

I'm saying that the answer is almost surely not about your clubs, but is about your technique more so. Different clubs might still help, but you should be able to hit your irons high enough with that clubhead speed with a 7I.

My 7i carries about 158 to 163 ball flight is generally straight mishits are rare but they are pulls or hooks. I may be hooding the club at impact but I am beginning to think the shaft is the issue. I did move the ball way forward near my right foot and hit a bit higher this weekend. I had some ping g400 that I hit higher I changed clubs for no good reason. When demo days come back I am going to try different clubs but being left handed limits selection. When I played well, 2-3 over from black tees, I had some Mizno blades that I hit real high but those days are in the past. I still play well enough so as to not to embarrass myself.

This is the answer I did not understand:

Then you should look at your technique not your clubs. Or both.

the "or both" part

Maybe your ball is actually behaving just fine. Look, not to be dodgy here but we like to know facts over feelings. Many golfers perceive their game in ways without really knowing the actual truth. Just like so many golfers who feel their game would most improve by improving their putting. Possible but not usually the case. Maybe you had a couple of shots that were a bit thinned and you have the idea that your irons aren’t flighting the ball the way they should?

Im just saying without having round stats and/or monitor numbers you may just be creating an issue that isn’t really there.

    • Day 201 3-6 Wider backswing trying to blend it all together for a full swing. Not looking good yet.
    • Day 74 - 2026-03-06 Backswing work out back at the net. Slow.
    • Day 101: did a stack session. Worked on hands down in the mirror during breaks.
    • Got told off yesterday for doing full swings and full speed swings so went to the range this lunchtime and did some slow speed stuff and freezers. A few videos from my session.    First few are DTL then some FO This one is of me looking at the club on the way back. I think I get my arms lifting all the way back, not that you’d know because YouTube keeps glitching on me.    Second one is two slow backswings. This glitches the first one but the glitch looks like a pretty good position so I’ll live. Second one works. Then another swing back and hit. When I’m not watching or really focusing on it it seems that my upper arm doesn’t lift at first, rather stays roughly where it is and I add the lift at the end so the club comes a bit more inside. I think that’s what I’m going to focus on. This one glitches a bit too but it’s really just pausing. This shows the club coming a bit more inside but not as laid off at the top Then a couple of face on ones And lastly one smoothie and one freezer at normal speed  Quite happy with how this went. I can see my arms are better when I take it slower. Also while I’m still pitching my arms out it doesn’t seem to be as extreme as yesterday. Light at the end of the tunnel 🙂
