I'm a high handicapper relatively new to golf looking to buy my first driver. I have previously just been hitting a hybrid off the tee.

I tried out my friend's Ping G driver the other day and liked it so was thinking I might buy it. But then I started wondering how much difference a high handicapper like me would notice between Ping drivers of the last ten years, if any? All I want is a driver that gives me the most forgiveness possible. Distance isn't important.

So should I be looking at getting something more recent, i.e. G425 or G400 max? Is their forgiveness really much that much better than older models like the G, or even models older than that like the G20 and G30?

Ideally I'd try it out for myself but this will probably be too difficult with the restrictions where I live.

Thanks!

Welcome to The Sand Trap. Ping drivers, for the most part, are amongst the most forgiving. The newer model have some improvements, but if you are just getting started the G model is a decent place. Ask you friend if you can borrow the driver and go to the range with it and hit it versus your hybrid.

I would advise you to go to stores and hit a bunch of drivers with different weight shafts and see what feels, looks and sounds best to you before buying anything new.

G410 plus. Awesome driver, very forgiving and Ping introduced weights on the head to promote fade or draw. I highly recommend. Personally I think it is longer than the G400.

I would not go older than the G30 that is what I currently play and appears to be of a similar design and material as the newer ones. The G20 looks to have more metal and less composite

Save some money and buy a G20. It is so forgiving it is almost like cheating and is as long as anything out there. I have tried every driver on the market and the only driver that was longer for me was longer by only 3 yards.

The G driver is a good one. I had one for three months until I got my Exotics back after I got separated.

    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
