Hello everyone, my name is Andy, 38 from Perth Western Australia. I've been playing golf for about 3 years. The last 6 months I've started getting more serious about playing competitively. I love golf, I love playing it and following it. I'm pretty honest about my golfing ability - my handicap index is 21.7, I'm prone to big rounds of 100+ and am happy with any round under 100 or 30+ stableford points. I don't know if I should be embarrassed about my handicap and my dedication to the sport - I practice, play, think and spend money on my game probably way too much. My ball striking is as inconsistent and you'd expect from a 22 handicapper across all areas. I'm a member of a club in a beautiful native bush surrounding. Its a very challenging, tree adorned, long course (slope 132/73). I get 3 extra shots to my handicap on the course. My golf has improved, that I can say, since joining my club about 3 months ago. and learning to play the course. For example, I've had to learn to hit multiple different clubs off the tee, like my 3 and 5 wood.

I'm interested in the mental side of learning how to play your best in competitive situations. I'm also a maths nerd (by profession) and love the concept of stat tracking (I have a Shotscope V3). I am currently reading "Lowest Score Wins" which is what got me on to this forum. I've been seduced previously in to other course strategy/game improvement mantras like Will Robbins "The Scoring Method" and Golf Sidekick (which I cant really make sense of to be honest because its pretty contradictory). I will very likely have lots of questions relating to the concepts in Lowest Score Wins.

Cheers!

First, welcome to TST.  You sound a lot like I did when I joined -- except I think my handicap was around 25 instead of 22 ;-)  I thought about golf all the time, spent a lot of money on it, but I really enjoyed what I was doing and I did eventually get better (a little under two years ago, I broke 80 for the first time -- and you will too, someday).

You'll get that swing to be better.  It's probably fairly consistent in that most of your results fit into some description -- I'd view that as encouraging.  If, for example, 89% of your shots either go straight or curve right, you can probably play for that;  I'll bet you already do.

Anyway, welcome to the site.  We're going to have a lot of fun making you the best golfer we can.

    • Day 29 (31 Dec 25) - played a casual year-end 18 with a couple of friends.
    • Day 457 - 2025-12-31 Stayed after some GEARS Hybrid stuff with my senior girls and got some work in. Also, kicked Tegan's butt at a chipping contest with a wedge that has a lousy toe profile.
    • Day 141 12-31 Reconnecting arm and club face work. Making sure left wrist is arched only on the downswing. Not doing full swings, im pausing at the top and will do a few rehearsals.  Hit a few real balls  after, and had some curve way left.
    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn.
