Golf Scoring Apps for Outings

Recommended Posts

I am looking for an App for both iPhone & Android that can be easily & affordably used for an upcoming TST Outing in May 2023 (see thread below) and am looking for a app to use for real time scoring.  I would like the ability to enter handicaps and also run a "Game" or two to add fun to the outing.  I've located some on my iPhone App Store but many have very few & very mixed reviews.  Looking for ideas

@StuM… Why?

Though I love online scoring for events (like, my daughter playing a college event, etc.)…

  • We've never had them in the past (not really a "reason" just pointing it out)
  • They cost money, typically.
  • Not everyone has a phone.
  • Not everyone wants to BE on their phone. I know I enjoy not having to be on my phone when I'm playing golf.
  • There's some mystery to not knowing where you stand that I find fun.

Plus, sometimes, the games we make up aren't necessarily supported by the various apps you might find.

I'm not saying "no, definitely." But I am asking… why?

What do the others attending think?

If people do not want to use it for TST Outing, no problem.  I would still like ideas as I do not people that may like them.

The USGA GHIN app does some basic stuff like keeping score for a group, and gross/net matches.

I think other apps like Grint or 18birdies may do more, but I can ent used either of those since before I kept a handicap.

I think in most of them (like Golf Genius, etc.) you will end up paying about $150 per tournament or so.

Maybe more nowadays.

TheGrint, I believe requires at least one in each foursome to be a premium member.

For my MGA chapter, we started using Playthru Golf.  It's not an app, but a web-based scoring program.  It has a live leaderboard and is free, as long as you don't need the program to create scorecards or other options.  If you only want it for scoring purposes, it's totally free.  Someone will have to start an account, create the event on the website, and send out the link to the competitors.  I've used it several times with no hiccups, other than players forgetting to put in their scores.  It does not have GPS capabilities.  It is only for scorekeeping.

I used the Hole 19 despite loading various others onto my phone.  It was the first one I tried and I was happy enough with it.  Then, recently my home club switched to the Online Golf app, so I am now using that since it will register my score and sort out my handicap all together.  The only problem with it is the lack of information.  The Hole 19 app had data like whether the ball went left or right off the tee, bunker shots, penalties, number of putts, GIR etc.  Unfortunately all the Online Golf app has is the score but it is easier to use one app only rather than 2 separate ones at the same time.  Maybe over time I will try using both and see if it works.

    • I stumbled across these pictures of the PXG mini-driver. I hear PXG is going to call it The "Secret Weapon".    Gappy Hilmore (@allgolfequipment) • Instagram photos and videos 343 likes, 5 comments - allgolfequipment on February 26, 2024: "Via @golfwrx In hand photos of @ericjamescole’s new PXG Mini Driver: The Secret Weapon 🧨💣🔥🚀 #pxg #sugardaddy #pxgtroops #0811 #0211...
    • Day 20: 12/30/2024 I've been working on my swing in front of the mirror today. Spent a lot of time at slow speed, mid speed and a couple at full speed. I just came back in from the garage where I practiced my PPJ swing by hitting about 10 balls with the 6-iron into my net.
    • I'm just guessing here. But couldn't Titleist build a mini-driver with a very low center of gravity? Then it would work off the deck. The deep face wouldn't be as problematic.  I'm just spit-balling. I know nothing about this product.
    • Yea, but a deeper face makes it not as useful off the fairway. This is why the driver is not easy to hit off the fairway.  For a select few PGA Tour players, it might be good. The concept of the mini driver has been around for a long time now. Very few ever keep it in their bag. This is a guess, but probably because it sucks off the ground. Nothing here looks like it is any different than the other mini drivers of the past.  I get it from Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris point of view. They hit the ball a long way. The odds they ever hit a 3-wood off the turf is like what, a handful a times a year? They probably would hit it 98% off the tee and 2% off the ground. They probably want something that think is longer off the tee versus their 3-wood because they don't hit the 3-wood off the ground much at all.  This is where I say, Titleist claiming "worked as a go-to club off the tee and off the deck." is more marketing than something that is actually beneficial to a golfer. This is primarily for off the tee.
    • One thing I've noticed with Mini Drivers is that the manufacturers seem like they keep their quantities somewhat limited.  The last two TaylorMade Mini's and the Callaway AI Smoke Mini were sold out quickly.
