Someone help! I went to the golf store today to hit the Odyssey White Hot Tour and the Cameron Red X3 to add a mallet putter to my bag for a bit of change every so often. I quickly ruled out the Odyssey, I just do not like the feel of the face. I was enjoying the Cameron until the store employee comes over and starts talking about the Taylor Made Spider. I hit a few putts with it and it was amazing. I was trying to mis-hit them on the toe and heel and it still rolled good. It felt very solid through impact and has a good weight to it so there is no loop in the stroke. BUT... it is UGLY, really ugly. I know that you do not make putts with the look of the club but that is a tough pill to swallow. Please someone tell me if you get used to the look of this thing after you start sinking putts with it. I will hit it a few more times to make sure it is as good as I think, but do not know if I will be able to get over the look.

If this was ten or fifteen years ago and somebody had showed you a 460cc driver, you probably would have said, 'Ugh, thats brutal! I'll never get used to that! Wheres my Persimmon?'

I guess what I mean is that you're just not used to looking at a putter that shape. Take it out and demo it, to see if you like it. If you use it enough, you will eventually get used to it (probably, anyway!).

It doesn't look all that bad, it has a movable weight system, that's kind of crazy to see on a putter, but hey, if you like the feel of it and your hitting some good shots, no reason not to buy it. Just make sure that the weights on the demo are the same as the ones on your new club.

As you may be able to tell from my avatar I use one. I thought the same thing the first time I saw it. Then I putted with it. Now I think it's gorgeous. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, you know. It lines up really easily and its dead on with the short ones. Also, I like the removable weights. When I first bought it, it was a tad on the light side so I switched out the weights and now it feels great. Hope this helps.

Your putter may be ugly but your sub 30 putts per round will look beautiful

Just think of it that way.

I am going to go back this weekend and hit some more putts with it and if it still strokes it well I will sell my Cameron Studio Stainless (plan to buy a Mid Slant Select) and buy the Spider in hopes that I get used of the look. If I can't, then will just sell it in July when I get my new Cameron. Thanks for the insight. I agree that if it lowers my score, I could get used to anything!

I agree the thing is UGLY! But every week I see more and more pros using one on tour so there must be something to it. I think Goydos was using one last week in the Players and he putted tremendously. If it sinks the putts I say go for it.

I just used one today in a round of golf. I'm reviewing it shortly, but suffice to say, it looks really good when the ball has left he face on-line, with good feel, and a nice roll.

But yeah, it's kinda ugly. I never cared for the "2-Ball" style graphics. A simple line would be nice(r).

The local golf store owner said that about 28 tour pros are using the spider. I did notice that Goydos was using one in the Player's. They are interesting - and flying off the shelves around here....

I actually like the look of it! It looks like a spaceship! I know, juvenile, but that's how I feel. Also, I have hit it and it feels great.

I have one and it is amazing to use. I also liked the look of it from the start. Its very different which is what I think I like. I guess there are people who like change and people who like tradition so depending what camp you are in it depends what you think of it.

I just wanted to ask a question. How is everyone using the Moveable weights on the spider? I have one and was just wondering. I understand putting in matching heavier or lighter weights to increase or decrease weight. Would there be any reason to have the weights not match?

Thanks

lol this is great, i think it's pretty funny how they make even putters now that are just huge. It's like there taking the common men quote "bigger is better" and taking it to a whole new level...

I hit it at the store earlier this week, and I thought it was pretty awesome. I really like the graphics for lining up to your target. It felt good, and I made quite a few putts with it. If a new putter was close to the top of my list of gear to buy it would definitely be considered.

    • Yes. If you choose to take the ball out of the bunker instead of taking maximum available relief… it costs a stroke.
    • I got another one today....Number 17. Par 5 that has water left and right on the layup. I smacked a drive down the left side and got a little lazy on the layup and fanned my 6 iron. With 112 to a crowned green I got it to 3 feet and birdie!  Only 5 and 15 is left for this year!
    • Maybe I didn’t explain this properly. Back and front can be confusing.  There was no place in the bunker that didn’t have 2-3 inches of rain water in it, except for a small spot on the slope nearest the pin. If I had dropped there I would be moving 6-7 feet closer to the hole. Since my ball was just inside the bunker, farthest side from the hole, I dropped one club length backward, which brought me out of the bunker. I could not have hit from that deep of water. Are you saying I would have had to take a penalty stroke due to rain water?
    • Day 550, May 5, 2024 Got a good hour in with a typical (for me) two-stick setup: pool noodle angled in front, yardstick on the ground angled 45° behind me.
    • Day 130: Cinco de Mayo Day 7/24 of Full Speed Spectrum training. Difficult training day after struggling to certify my warmup yesterday, and today. Finished 13 mph lower than my training speed on Thursday. Hope to hit some balls today.
