I am 6'5" and use +2.0" irons and +2.0 degree up lie. I use TT Dynamic Gold SL shafts. This helps you keep the swing weight in check.

For the driver I use a 46" shaft and it is perfectly fine for me. This is now the standard length on many drivers, which I find interesting, because I would think it would feel too long for most guys. I wish it were possible (i.e. cheaply possible) to adjust lies on drivers. I think this is why I prefer square head drivers because the view of the square front helps me keep the club head horizontally even at ball strike, or at least close.

I like 36.5" or even 37" for putters. 36" is OK if my back is not acting up.

I components! Currently playing Alpha and Nakashima.

+1" and 2 degrees up. Taylor Tour Burners.

I just bought a set of used irons, is it still worth it to get them fitted? or do people usually get irons fitted when they order new irons, so they can choose their shafts, etc...?

I'm 6'6" and im not a new golfer(doesnt mean very good but about 10 over usually). I used my boss's clubs and he has a +1.5" and i played much better. He is about 6'4". I try and use my old clubs and they are default height and i cant play at all. I go from relying on my putts to break even par from easily getting on the green for a shot at a birdie put. Do you think it is a good idea for me to get +1.5" 2*/1*? I have plenty of money to buy a good set but im not sure where to get them made for me. I'm looking at the taylor made burners but can i have them make them custom online? Their website is probably really expensive so if i could get them made somewhere else that would be great. Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks again!

Cutom fitted Titleist 755 irons; the custom measurements were standard loft & lie, standard length and reg flex tri-spec steel. So they are custom for me, and standard for anyone wanting to buy them down the line.

LongIron,

It would be worth it for you to have your swing sized up. I was a low handicap for years plying clubs that were too short and not upright enough and finally when I was fitted I was amazed at the difference. My length didn't change much (+1/2 to +1) but my lie angle went from 2 up to 5 up, it made a world of difference.

My clubfitter always tell me that i'm a nightmare. I'm just 5' 5'' but I have an avarage swing speed of 105. So I play 1 inch shorter but stiff.

LongIron,

Thanks - its definitely something I should get nailed-down, but ball striking really isn't my problem (comparatively). My short game is killing my scores and I think that is based more on lack of practice rather than lie/length.

I imagine I'll probably be similar to you in regards to not a lot of additional length, but substantial change in lie angle. What immediate change did you notice in your game?

My short game improved big time! I am 6'6 and had always thought that I needed +1 inch and 2* upright irons. The length works ok but when I finally checked my swing on a lie board it kept telling me that I needed a 5* upright lie. I didn't believe it until I adjusted my pitching wedge and oh my, what a difference! It was those little flip shots that would get me into trouble, after the switch, not more. Definitely look into it.

I had been using a standard set of irons...but just felt that I wasn't getting down on it enough...and when I did...I ended up chucking it a bit. This wasn't every swing, but just didn't feel right.

So I put in some 1" extensions and I feel much more confident and seem to be stricking the ball better as a result.

My hight states that I should be "standard", but with any golf club...it is more about feel...and I feel that the 1" longer just feels better.

    • Option one. Would like an ace even if it’s a worm burner. Have witnessed a couple of aces so would like to be on the other end.
    • OK - I think we should narrow down a weekend, and start there.  We're going to try to do this in June. I've created a Doodle poll where everyone can vote for the options that work for them.  Please include your username so I can track/post results. Doodle Doodle is the simplest way to schedule meetings with clients, colleagues, or friends. Find the best time for one-to-ones and team meetings with our user-friendly calendar tool. Get started today! (I only put in the Saturday dates, but assume the outing would include Friday - Sunday). Once we select a date that works for the most people, I'll start to line up courses and schedule and go from there.
    • Option #2 because I'd add the condition that it's in a tournament. Because that'd mean I'd break par in a tournament. And I already have a hole in one.
    • Hole in one is nice, but those low rounds stick in my memory better. I have two holes in one (and a third on a pitch and putt course which I count as a half). I've shot in the 60s three times in the last 10 years or so and I remember each one pretty well. I'd take the low round.
    • Would You Rather #68: Would you rather make a hole-in-one on a perfectly struck shot, during a round where you otherwise played pretty poorly.  or  Would you rather play well all day and beat your personal best by let's say 3 strokes, but with no eagles.    I'd take option 2.   Although option 1 is always exciting, and rewarding. playing well all day is very exciting because I can also do the opposite.
