I once went into Costco for a hotdog and came out with a hotdog and a Taylor Made 3 wood.

I found an old Arnold Palmer blade putter in a used putter bin and I had to buy it because it felt so good putting with it.

I bought a set of japanese made forged blades on impulse that I later exchange for Mizuno wedges.

Well you only live once. I'm only 15. I buy basically anything that I want (that I can afford). I invested $4000 into the stock market 2 years ago, that is now worth $2000... (yeah though I was ment to gain money there...)But I just save up a little and oh that wedge on ebay looks nice... cha ching.... I think that there is no reason to stash away money for when your retired as you would have no real use for it then.

I wouldn't even have asked this question when I was 16. Im 36 now and woudn't ask this question out loud...lol..only to myself in those quiet times alone. I just think it's great your into golf that much.

I think it's a good idea to trust your clubs, for me that means leaving them in the bag a while. That being said I went through 5 sets of irons in about 18 months finding what was right for me.

This is a new problem for me. I've never really got into buying much equipment. About a week ago I went and bought a new hybrid (24° crossbax)....loved it so much I decided to start considering getting another one with less loft. Just won a bid on eBay for a 20° Pro Baffler and I plan on getting some new irons this winter....

My bag is turning into a cornucopia!

I actually think I'm over my impulse buying right now. I've gotten everything I need. Just looking at golf clothes now.

I'm honestly so shitty at the game right now I haven't played or thought about golf for a week.

I look at it this way, its only money, you can always make more of it and you cant take it with you when you die, so why worry about it?
Ive been much the same lately. I bought a Titleist putter off of Ebay a month ago and since then Ive bought a Titleist 1 and 2-iron, a new golf bag, new golf shoes, a couple Titleist hats, a bunch of golfballs, and now Ive got a couple Titleist driving irons coming that I bought off of Ebay.
Now Ive got the itch to buy a Vokey wedge (56* or 60*).
As long as you are paying your bills, why not blow your money on golf? IMO, its betting than sitting in a bar drinking your money away or spending it on drugs or something along those lines. Even worse, you could be spending it on some high-maintenance girlfriend that is going to drop you like a bad habit as soon as some guy comes along who is better looking or has more money than you. Talk about a waste of money!

in the USA, acquiring material possession is such a big deal that we are all guilty of making unnecessary purchases.

I have my equipment pretty much like I like it so I don't buy too much as far as clubs go. I will tell you that I work at a golf course and so I get all my equipment ridiculously cheap. That being said I have a slight putter purchasing problem. I have 35 putters in my garage. I have started selling them but jeez. I also buy a lot of golf shirts.

For all you guys out there with wives, come on! You can't buy golf stuff because your wife won't let you?! You all need to grow a pair, go out and get a bank account your wife doesn't know you have and squirrel away money that she doesn't know you keep and sneek off to the golf shop when she doesn't know you're gone and buy whatever it is your heart desires and then lie out of your @$$ when she catches you and say you have had that club forever!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Dent, as a teacher, I think it is great you are spending $ on golf opposed to all the bad things you could do w/your $. Then again, you seem sensible enough abotu what it is you need opposed to want. Once you do get your own car, lots will change I assume. Depending on your support at home, only time will tell.
Have fun and do what you love, not what others tell you to do. But, as you ignore old people (not saying you do), try to remember that one day a portion of what they preach to you will all make sense.

As for the guys who are married and blame their wives for not allowing them to get new gear, sorry to hear that. I'm lucky enough to have a wife who doesn't care what I buy within reason. Clubs (not to mention guitar gear) come and go weekly at my house, just part of being married to me I guess.

I do get carried away club purchases and swaps, but it is enjoyable to me just trying whatever I can. We all know how our minds tell us we "need" a club, etc and if that actually does the trick it is well worth it in my belief.

Have fun and enjoy life!

That is funny because I am just the opposite. I barely ever spend my money and buying golf equipment is killing me. I've worked two years at k-mart on top of sports(which means I didn't work during the week or saturdays during the season) and i have 2000 in the bank after a car and paintball. I am trying to make my first purchase, a set of cleveland black pearl irons, for 250. Now all i can think about is that I still need wedges, driver, putter, and bag. Plus i'm left handed so its hard to find used left handed equipment.

I used to be that way, but I've slowed down. And my last few purchases(3 wood and hybrid) have been justified by how well I've been hitting them.

I bought a Vokey 60* chrome wedge off of Ebay last night. $37. I think Im pretty much done buying clubs for now.
All I really would be interested in now is a Titleist 3-wood and a set of AP1 irons. I'll probably buy those new though, especially since for an iron set all I want is a 5-PW. My 19* hybrid replace a 2-iron, the 22* hybrid replace a 3-iron and I think that I can grip down on the 22* if a shot calls for the distance of a 4-iron.

I really believe there's a point of diminishing returns where you're basically done tinkering with the bag. For me that coincided with a fitting. At this point all I really play with is different balls, though I did pick up a laser range finder (which I LOVE, by the way) for my latest real expenditure. But now I'm done! Don't really feel an urge to get anything else.

So I think my advice is go ahead and blow your bankroll because it's better than spending more in the long run by taking half measures and trying every new club?

Wow, what horrible advice.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
