Some buddies of mine are playing in a few captain's choice tournaments over the next few months. We are thinking about buying a dozen balls for use off the tee, and a dozen to be used for approach shots. What balls seems to be the longest off the tee, and which seem to be the best for good bite on the greens (I would assume Pro V1, but I thought there might be something better out there. Thanks for the help!

when im playing in 4 ball comps i use Nike Juice or the HX hot off the tee and then swap it for my normal ball on the fairway... those 2 balls are by far the longest I have ever hit, I won the long drive comp at the last work golf day I went to with the Nike Juice

Id say that if you want something that is long off the tee and still stops fast on the green, that youd be hard-pressed to beat a Titleist ProV1 or Nike One Platinum.

I like the HX Hot & Warbird for distance. HX is a 3 piece and Warbird is a 2. Both are pretty hard and dont spin much off the driver for less slice and more distance.

Pro V1 or Cally tour 56 for feel around the green. Those will spin and stop! just my 2 Cs.

are you allowed to do that? any tourni i've played in, once you start with a ball on a hole, unless that ball is lost, you have to continue playing it until the hole is over. You can switch balls on the next hole BUT, it must be of the same brand.

Hitting a distance ball off the tee and then switching to a hi-spin ball in the fairway is totally against the rules, LOL! Can only switch balls after the hole is finished.

I may be switching to the TopFlight FREAK as I found one today and liked the distance off the irons . . . and it checked up decent on the greens. Great ball for the mid irons.

ProV1's require a fast swing speed IMO as do many soft hi-spin balls.

So I can use a NXT tour for the par 3's and NXT extreme for anything longer as long as I'm not switching the ball during the hole?

Where in the rules does it say you can't switch brands of balls in between holes?

The only reference to this in the rules is the "one ball condition" (Appendix 1, Part C).

This states the commitee can choose to impose a one ball rule, where the player must use the same make and type of ball during a round. However although this isn't illegal, you should ask yourself whether its really in the spirit of the game to use a distance ball for driving and a soft spin ball for approach and short game. I always thought the reason this rule wasn't used often was so that if people lost or damaged a ball and they just had a random collection of balls in their bag they could replace it without being disqualified. However as a consequence this seems to be a loophole

That is illegal. You can't switch balls during the play of a hole.

You can play a distance ball on a par five, and a spinny ball on a delicate par four or a short par three or something, but you can't switch mid-hole.

Sorry. That was a typo on my part, I was thinking play a soft ball on a par 3 and play a distance ball on a longer hole, which was mentioned in the thread, but for some reason my hands had a mind of their own and typed there own thing.

I don't think that you should rule out the Taylormade TP Red and Black balls. They are plenty long off the tee and you get a lot of spin with them. The Black has better spin and distance than a ProV1x, while the Red has a little less spin but more distance than the ProV1. They are also significantly cheaper.

they really aren't significantly cheaper...the TM's are the same price practically as the Titleists.

Assuming these tourny's allow the ball switching or you can somehow get away w/ it, go w/ Bridgestone B-330 for drives and Nike One Platinum for everything else.

Killer combo.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
