I've played around with both the foam and the plastic practice balls. I don't think you can really feel mishits such that you'll get feedback and to what you may have done wrong on a certain shot, but they definitely seem to show you the ball flight that the shot would have had.

I've tried several of both kinds. I like the foam balls. They're smaller and seem to jump off the irons - then stop in mid-air and drop to the ground. If struck correctly it's easy to tell the difference between a square clubface from an open or closed one(better than the wiffle variety). The Golf Digest brand balls seem to go 30 to 60 yards. Not good for hitting in a small yard.

I have the harder foam balls and the squishy foam balls. I have an Aerobe frisbee that I use as a target. I have thick carpet in my apartment which allows the balls to really spin. I can hit flops with a 60* and the harder foam balls spin back a good 3-4 feet every time. Outdoors they really dont fly to well, but indoors they are great for working on feel and technique.

I've used several types:
plastic, dimpled, hollow, 2 types: rigid & soft
plastic, wiffle, 3 types: thick/rigid, thin/rigid, soft/rubbery
foam, solid, 2 types: firm/smooth & soft/dimpled
BirdieBalls

My main purpose when I use any of these is to see whether I'm giving the ball any sidespin, and the longest flight area I have on my small suburban property is about 30 yards. The only balls I've found yet that won't overfly my area (across the fence into the neighbor's yard) with a full-swing 6-iron but that do an acceptable job of showing spin are the plastic, dimpled, hollow, soft balls. By "soft", I mean that the ball will significantly cave in well before you've squeezed hard enough to break an egg.

Does anyone know where to find these balls? I'm almost out of them (I occasionally lose them over a fence or into the storm drain), and I can't find them at a local retailer (Wal-Mart, Target, Dick's, Sports Authority). I bought them a few years ago, and I don't remember the manufacturer name or where I bought them. The plastic, hollow, dimpled balls I find online don't mention whether they're soft or rigid.

Help! Thanks,

Eric

I use the almost golf, golf balls as well they are awesome. They have helped me a lot with my long irons. I dont recommend them for practing chipping, pitches, etc. Unless you have problems with ball contact.

But they have a good feel, and tell you your trajectory. Has really helped me with drawing my long irons.

Has anyone ever heard of these? If so, how good are they?

I'm a bit confused about the "refillable" golf balls part. So do they refill it for free if you lose any or what?

I dont have any yet myself, but I'm pretty sure they're made of a hard enough compound that they don't bend, dent, and get out of shape like typical yellow foam backyard balls, they have dimple designs so the aerodynamics are the same, they fly the exact same as a regular ball but 1/3 the distance.

So you can practice with your sand wedge in your backyard. If these balls slice, a real one would've and so on and so forth. I'd like to get some and see how accurate they are, but I've heard good things. Certainly better than any other foam or wiffle ball for backyard play or practice.

I love Almost Golf Balls. Too bad I lost 9 of the 10 I bought already.

Yea I've got three dogs I'm concerned about thinking they're new chew toys. That plus lawnmowers that are attracted to practice balls. Plus, 1/3 the distance is just long enough for me to crank an iron into my neighbors pool! Of course if I hook it like usual it'll just hit my house so I should be good.

Well they are as hard as regular balls. I know this because my friends brother said i bet u cant hit my brother who was 30yds away. I tried to hit a high cut over his head and hit him square in the face.....he assured me it hurt more than foam balls.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
