No. I use a variety of clubs for greenside chipping. It depends on where I want the ball to land and how far it has to run before dropping in the cup

on bump and runs I use 8 iron exclusively, even if i land them in the fairway fronting the green or the fringe, pretty good at it, I treat it as a long putt, have become pretty good at judging the speed slow down when it lands in the fringe.

Out of greenside rough its the CG12 Cleveland SW, i ground off the 12 degree bounce to approx 6 degrees....man I love that club.

I only put a 60 degree in the bag for scrambles, in hope for a great shot if we have a putt in makeable distance already.

I mainly use my 56* for all my chipping, and the 60* out of the sand (if its close to the green, and not much green to work with). For chips out of thick rough that I need to make run, I like using my hybrid.

tight lies 60.

rough 56.

i find it easier using more bounce in rough. cuts through the grass easier. my 60 always gets caught in the rough and I end up hitting weird shots. lol

It all depends on teh lie and the distance to the landing area. If I am just in the fringe, ill hit a 5 or 6 iron. If Im in deep greenside rough about 10 feet from the green Ill play a LW (or in my case a sw bc I am poor)

I use my 60 nearly exclusively from anywhere close to the green. The only shot I can think of where I don't use my lob is a bunker shot with more than 20 yards to the pin. For that I'll pull my SW. But I fringe chip with my lob. I'll just deloft and get excellent checkup with my CG14. I'll use it out of thick rough, fluffy lies, greenside bunkers (short or a bit longer from the other side of the green), flops if I really need to hit such a shot. Its my most inconsistent shortgame shot, so I don't use it a lot.

The thing for me is, most of the greens on the "original" 18 at my home course are quite small. the 3rd 9 at my home course incorporates some sizeable greens and I'll use a PW for long chips. I tend to put the ball back in my stance for all my chips, so an 8 or 9, or even a less lofted club usually turns out bad for me.

I holed out for a birdie on a fringe chip shot last week with my 60. People have tried to convince me during a round (especially if they don't know me), to try a less lofted club. I just shake my head. I like the weight of the lob, the length, I get to use the entire grip. Works for me

I love my Vokey 60. I use it out of the sand, and often times "pitch" and "approach" with it. I like to chip with a pw or 9 through 7 iron, though. Flatter with more run is my type of chip.

When I chip, I use a mini flop that bounces and rolls maybe 4 feet and stops. When you get good, smooth and reliable with it, it can be your Ace shot.

I just bought a Vokey 60 on here with 4* bounce, which is perfect for my swing, and I can't wait to try that bad boy out.

I used to use a variety of clubs, but mostly the wedges. Now I pretty much always use the 54° wedge on the Utley short game book's advice. I think the pros outweigh the cons.

benn trying to utilize my lob wedge around the green in all situations and it has gotten me in more trouble than using it in certain situations. so if I need to flop over something I use it. If not I just stick to a 7 or 8 iron and chip with it.

Well, I would say you are good at what you practice.

There are pros who only use one club around the greens. Craig Stadler comes to mind. He only uses his sand wedge (that started back in the day when your sand wedge was the only "true" wedge and most lofted wedge in your bag). I think he does pretty well with just one club around the greens.

Now, if you talk to Phil Mickelson (or his teacher Dave Pelz) they will tell you to use one swing, and different clubs to get the distance you need.

I can't tell you how many times I have said to myself after a bad short shot around the green "Right swing... Wrong Club". I am seriously thinking of going back to using one club around the greens. I think the sand wedge is better IMHO than the lob wedge. It just depends on how fast the greens are you are chipping to, and personal preference.

I still like to use my 9 iron for chip and runs, I do it alot, and so I have great feel for distance.

Bottom line is, like I said in the top line... "you are good at what you practice"...

Until recently I was using my 48° pitching wedge for everything, and was having a little trouble getting my pitches high and soft, especially the dreaded over the bunker to the short-sided pin. Then I read Stan Utley's book (Getting Up and Down) in which he advocates using a 58° wedge (a bent 56°) for everything. So I now am trying to use my 56° wedge for everything -- I haven't bent it yet because the quasi-lob wedge sort of intimidates me -- and it seems to be working better. Making the club change is the hardest thing, since you have to start trusting your instincts with a new club and dial in the new feel.

I do have a nice lob wedge, though, which I stare at in awe and never use. I seem to either skull it or hit it directly up in the air 25 feet whereupon it lands in the sand in front of me.

I always use the 60*. I can play any shot I want with it. I usually put it way back in the stance and hit a nice low spinner. I can also hit a mid height shot and different flop shots. I found it was a lot easier just to use one club around the green.

if i have to shoot over something, i'll use my lob wedge but most of the time, if i have a good distance to travel and a relatively flat green to deal with, i'll take out my 9 iron. Otherwise, it's a mix of the 52º and the lob.

    • Day 1: After a long practice layoff due to injury, vacation, winter darkness, and work stuff, I'm trying to start back up again. Today I just hit balls with keys from my lesson 6-ish weeks ago; neutral grip and centered turn. Gonna work with that for a few weeks, see how it goes, and then get a lesson scheduled.
    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
