I was reading Jeff Foxworthy's book on golf, where he says that all the holes in hell will be 55 yards. I'm a beginner, so I don't understand this. Are short holes like this considered the hardest ones?

PS - Just in case anyone's wondering, the book is only mildly amusing and not worth buying.

Im guessing thats a short-game reference. A lot of people struggle with their chipping, pitching and putting, so Id have to guess thats why he says all the holes in Hell with be 55 yards.
If thats true, book me a teetime in Hell!

IMO, it is because for just about anyone, 55 yards is a total touch shot. You can't just swing a club normally and it will go that distance. You have to choke down and/or adjust your swing with a lofted club. Then, because it is a lofted club, you have to worry about spin and trajectory also. So many things can go wrong that for the majority of people it is a very difficult shot. I would much rather have 85 yards than 55.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

1. Because that's a touch shot, like the above poster.
2. Because when the beginner screws up, they get really pissed because it was only 55 yards, in their minds.

How many tries would it take to make aces with all 14 of your clubs from 55 yards?

Ahh, but see, there-in lies the issue ... they all may be 55 yard holes, but you don't get to use YOUR clubs ... you have to use "Hell's Rentals" ... trust me, I bet it would be easier trying to throw the ball into the hole ...

Don't worry about golf in hell.
If there is golf in heaven, what would you shoot?
Every time out you would try to break your previous best score of 18.
No room for improvement would get old.

Agreed. Remember the episode of the Twilight Zone where the criminal won every casino game he played and got all of the women? Then he realized he was in hell? Golf in hell would result in an ace on every hole.

Well, if you're in hell, no one will care about ettiquete or sportsmanship. Pick the ball up with your hand, put it in the hole and score an "1" for every hole. And if anyone thells you to go to hell, just say "Here we are!"

I hear golf in hell is pretty neat.

All of your dream courses are there and you get any clubs you want in any amount. The caddies are former playmates as are the beverage servers. Oh, there are no golf balls in hell.
