The course I play every week plays a pretty true 6800 yards from the tees I play from and 7100+ from the tips (never have played there nor should I). There is only like 3-4 holes (besides the par 3s) that don't have a 200yard+ carry to the fairway so it pretty much puts driver in my hand all day long. Last week when I played, I only hit 7 shots with my irons all day besides around the green chipping on. I hit hybrid in all day pretty much, including all Par 3s. Shortest one plays like 180 which is a smooth 4 hybrid for me. Longest plays 240 with a forced carry of 170 over water which is a 2 hybrid plus a nice pitch onto the green I've only played for just over a year now and have pretty much learned the game on this course.

But anyway, whenever I go play somewhere else looking at the score card to see the proper tees to play from, it seems like the course is a lot shorter. I played a few courses in Orlando and Nags Head and other courses in my area and they always seem to be anywhere from 5800 to 6300 yards and I love this cause I don't have to hit hybrid into the green all day long and can hit irons which are my strong point.

I'm just curious to what course yardages you guys consider to be "long"

I would say a long course is anything above 6800 yards, given the weather we have in the UK at the moment, that feels like a longgg way.

My course is approx 6900 yards give or take. To me, it is a huge course and on one par 4 I hit driver, 5 wood to reach the green

Ill go with 7000 for me, I once played a course that was like 7100, and had a par 4 480. I hit like driver, 3 wood. It was crazy.

i'll go with anything over 6800 as being "long." there are two local courses i play fairly regularly, one is 7100 from tips and the other is a staggering 7400. the 7100 i'll hit from the tips, but the 7400 i just can't do. i usually move up to the blue tee (6800) on that one.

I agree with the others anything over 6,800 and it's a long way in to the green. The course my buddy and I played at yesterday had the tips at around 7,200...We played the whites at 6,500. Kinda wish they had something around 6,700 I feel like that is a good distance to make it fun, but challenging.

Most of the courses in my area max out around 6800-7000 yards, which I consider long. I am not a short driver (realistic carry distance 230-240), but I have found my ideal yardage to be around 6100 yards because that usually means I am hitting a short to mid iron into all greens. About 6500 yards starts to be kind of long, but it really depends where those yards are. If the course is long but lots of downhill holes (like 1 course I play quite a bit) or where the yardage is mostly on par 5's and par 3's it's not so bad. What I hate are those 425 to 450 yard par 4's. I do not want to have more than a couple approaches into Par 4's of more than 175 yards. It's hard to score well when hitting hybrid into those everytime.

I'm definitely in the minority here; I like my courses to be 5,700 to 6,300 yards. I try to play the tees where the Par 3's are in the 140-160 range for at least 2 of them. 180 or so is a long enough Par 3. More than length though, I try to play the tees which puts the slope at around 116-124. Courses with 130 slopes are more than I want to deal with!

Really depends on where the yardage falls. Doesn't really matter if a par 5 is 520 yds or 600.....it's a 3 shot hole either way and I'm going to lay up the same in either case. If the extra yards are stretching 410 yd par 4's to 470 though, it's the difference between a 7 or 8 iron and a hybrid or maybe even having to pull out the 3 wood.

Having said that, anything over about 6900 yds is usually going to make for a long day for me.

Length is an individual thing. Play what is comfortable for you and your group. If tee boxes don't quite fit play a combo of backs and middles. Play the 3's at desirable lengths and push back on 5's. There's no rule about gotta play all white's/blue's.....I've played a number of courses that actually card this option. Enjoy.

We have several here that are over 7000 yards including a monster that measures 7800 yards. Length of a course doesn't bother me I have length to spare. I would much rather play a long course with large fairways as opposed to a shorter tight course.

But to answer your question I would consider any course over 7200 yards to be on the long side.

For me it depends on the course, Bretwood North (or South to a lesser extent, Keene NH) at ~7000 are comfortable but The Shattuck (Jaffrey NH) at ~6800 is insane long.

Bretwood North is par 72 and will tolerate a little bombing and spraying. The Shattuck is par 71 and will generally not tolerate even the slightest mishit ball (73.5/152/6764).

7,000 plus constitutes long to me. I played one today, but I didn't play the tips, so it was only 6,636 for me, which is a perfectly challenging length for my game.

The tees I usually play measure out at 6800 and this is fine for me. The course usually plays shorter as it can be quite dry here and its a links style, so no trees, lots of rough but fairly forgiving. The length tends to be in the par 4s, quite af ew around 450 yards, and I can reach them in two, though not every time. When the course plays wetter and the wind picks up, 15-25 mph isn't unusual, then I'll move forward. Played a course I in the Woodlands on Saturday I hadn't played before so played off the whites. There had been a lot of rain last week and the wind was up, on a 340 yard par 4 it took me a driver and 4 hybrid to reach the green, but I did make the putt!
