What club did you give up in order to add a 4th wedge?

I used to play a 45* PW, a 50* GW, a 56* SW, and a 60* LW and no 5 wood... now I have an 18* 2H that replaces a typical 5 wood and only play 3 wedges... PW, 52*, 58*... my 52 and 58 have a very versitle grind which allows me to play pretty much whatever I need.

I personally think I am better with 3 wedges than 4... taking a little off one on full shots isn't a problem for me, and I can hit a lot of shots with those clubs.
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

Based on my set, I'd say 3 iron (I didn't order one with the new irons for the first time), but I've also got a hybrid that I've started using more and the 4 iron is the victim.

Didn't need to. If you can't get it done with three wedges you don't need to be playing. Three is plenty to be creative with.

I think you dont need 4 wedges and three is enough ( unless ur phil mickelson lol) i use 58, 52 n pw 45 and that gives me enough choices. IMO; Its very interesting to see how many people have hybrids these days almost every one has at least 1 and some have up to 4,5 and so on. They are also becoming increasingly popular with pros who mainly use them to replace 5w/2i and 3i. It seems to have become a phenomenon and the death of the 2 iron ( the 1 has been dead for a long time ) seems to have already taken place and soon even a three iron. That is a bit off topic but it relates to the influx in people buying wedges and having 3, 4 and 5 now these days is completly normal. But when i started playing ( 5 years ago ) people only had 2,3. This is because the hybrid replaces the 5w, 7w, 3i, 4i with only 2 or 1 club. i have a 21 which replaces my 5w but i still carry 3i for its workability. IMO almost evry has a gap wedge these days as i think they are essential to being a good golfer and help the high handicapper much more than a lw.

Thanks for dictating to the rest how we should play the game, Richard. Care to rail on about tee length or glove color, too? You must be a hoot at dinner parties.

dropped my woods. Just use a 19* and a 23* hybrid and start irons at 4. 240 is about my limit on distance control. After that, there's too much that can go wrong in terms of me completing my shot the way I want so the 2h is enough.

Love having more wedges. PW is a dedicated iron as is my GW, except more half shots with the GW. SW and LW are great for full shots or any shortgame stuff. I chip with my SW and I pitch with my LW (to label them simply) but it can switch back and forth as I need the bounce.

That's the level I need to get back to. Laid off the game for a few years and started back 9 months ago. Most aspects are now getting close to where I was before (10 hcp).

Full wedges shots are decent....my problem is with in between yardages and close in flops. Full PW is 120 yards for me. To drop yardage, I grip down a bit and swing normally. Full SW is 85 yards. I can grip down and still swing fully down to about 65 yards....just outside of where my full LW can take over. I lay up dead on 100 yards often on the par 5's at my course. It would be nice to have a weapon that works like a charm from this distance w/o making any adjustments. The two areas that I want to shore up are a true 100 yard stick and then those testy close in flops. I'll make room for a GW but need to get help and practice the close in shots.

I play with a slingshot iron set PW, a Solus 51° gap wedge, and an R.A.C 58°. they are working great. i can hit all shots with the 58°. it has the loft of a lob wedge and i can tilt it to have the bump and run ability of a pw.

I didn't. I always carried 13 clubs (Driver, 2-9, PW, SW, LW, P) in the past so I just added the GW and called it good. My club make up has changed slightly since getting new irons last fall (swapped 2-iron for a 3-wood, no 2-iron in the ZM's ).

I can get it done with three wedges and can get creative with any of them. I can be

more creative and precise with four. If I am allowed 14 clubs I will use the ones best suited to me and the courses I play. I don't need three long irons, so I choose to take an extra wedge.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

3 iron. I'll hit it at the range when I buy the clubs and then never hit it again.

I'm glad you can build a set without a 3 iron in it.

YMMV

I guess a 2 iron.
I've always had 4 wedges so I never had to take anything out
If I was to take one out ever, It'd be for a 2 iron, which isn't necessary.

Although I technically carry 4 clubs labeled as "wedges", I really only use 2 for more than 99% of my chipping and pitching. My 52° X Tour is my main general purpose wedge, and my 58° X Tour is used when I don't have the luxury of enough green to let the ball take a longer hop.

My 56° CG11 is strictly used from sand, so it's strictly a specialty club, and the PW is mostly just played as my shortest short iron.

And by the way... I didn't drop anything to add a wedge... before I added the current wedge setup I was only carrying 12 or 13 clubs anyway.

Took out the 5 wood, didn't have any use for it before hand anyway, as i was hitting my hybrid nearly as far as it anyway

Adding the 56* wedge to the bag has paid off big time i must say! Ive shaved 3 strokes off my score just from having a club that can bridge that gap between the 52 and 60!

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
