Yeap, we've certainly got it good down here. Believe it or not, we have been get some gnarly weather lately. It's kept me off the course at least. Today it was about 50* and rainy all day. No thanks. There is a saying around here "There are plenty of good days to play."

But, I did experience an actual off-season myself. December '08 was pretty dead on the mini-tours. I got myself into the gym with a trainer. I did practice a few times in the rain. It was pretty fun.

I can't wait for it to be 50*, regardless if it is raining or not. a couple days ago it was in the high 30's and i was outside beating my rug out out in a tee shirt. today it felt like 4* with the windchill.

To the OP, i've been on this and other forums alot. I also play alot of video games, mostly COD4 and waw and madden. And maybe if i have some time left over i do my school work.

Im in Wisconsin and I say, "what off-season?" Theres a heated driving range nearby and I can practicie my putting on the living room floor all winter long.
My winter activities consist of snowmobiling and if we dont get too much snow, I spend a lot of time in the woods cutting firewood.

Reading---golf history, instruction books, history (I finished "1776", and am getting "John Adams",and am still reading "Team of Rivals"). Also economics--more so now than ever. I use the winter months as a chance to recharge and re-evaluate. By the way, in college, I had Doris Kearns Goodwin as an instructor in my freshman year. She is the author of "Team of Rivals" and has won the Pulitzer Prize (for "No Ordinary Time"). She was a great teacher, and is obviously a great writer. Some people excel at both oral and written communication, and that description fits her.

Review and prepare: Since I am a golf instructor, and my first 3 indoor classes start on March 3 and March 7, I review what I have done before, review good instruction tapes, and look at tapes of past student's swings. The two books by Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson "Every Shot Must Have a Purpose" and "The Game Before The Game" are always good to re-read. Work out intensely: once golf season begins here in Central New York, I do only exercises to stay toned up and do running for cardio-vascular conditioning. Play chess: the last thing that I do in the spring-summer-fall is play chess. There are too many things to do outside. It is a perfect game for the winter months. We also have "Golf Trivia" and play that. Does anyone else have that game, and do they play it?

Not much of an off season in MS either, but I have had a couple of weeks this winter that I only got to play 1 time. Kind of hit and miss this time of year. But I did play 4 times this past week.

Days I can't play golf I take my golden retriever for long walks. I also do some reading, fart around on the internet......... If I lived up north and couldn't play golf for 4-5 months, I would probably go insane.

Up here in Montreal , it's all about Hockey! I Play outside and i don't really care about the cold , if you move enough you don't feel it. This winter is definitely one of the best winters in recent years in terms of ice quality! The off season you try to stay warm, watch the golf channel, dream of the coming season and go to a couple of golf shows. Finally a trip or two to where it is warm for a few rounds to tide you over till golf season comes.

I've been keeping up with my running. I've done a couple races including a half-marathon. I started running back in June and have kept it going pretty good. I set a couple goals for next year to keep the motivation up.

Fairways and Greens.

Here's one from Southern California... "Off season? We don't have no stinkin' off season!"

I would chip and putt indoors. And I would have one of these "whippy" clubs with a shaft like a wet noodle to work on my form. It's pretty amazing what those things can do for your swing without even hitting a ball. SubPar

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
