Just a quick question to throw out there... Has anyone ever heard of a Golf course not allowing the golf shop staff to play the course?

A friend of mine called me today. He applied for a job at a golf course, and they don't allow range use or playing privileges. It's not like it's a Private course or anything, it's a city owned golf course. Even the ultra-private course I grew up on as a junior allowed the golf shop staff to play.

Any thoughts...

Cheers, Allan

While on duty when it's really slow or at all? If it's at all... That's pretty ridiculous, IMO.

I'd compare it to bars not letting employees drink there, which is something I know happens but I have never experienced as an employee. In the end, I think it just says something about the management and how they view their employees and how much trust exists.

The only reason I work at a golf course is to get the range for free and to play very cheap/free rounds. If they took that away, I'd quit in a heartbeat.

Agreed. I have no idea why they would not let staff play there.

no playing period, day off, after their shift, etc... However, they do allow their staff to putt on the putting green.

They are welcome to pay for the round, full price, no discount.

That seems kind of ridiculous....

I work at a very exclusive country club and have full access to the golf facilities as long as it isn't busy...

I have several retired friends who work at courses. They work for a few extra dollars for trips and to play free golf. I think the employees do more for people who treat them well and for those that donot trust them.

Wow, that's a first for me. A lot of times local courses will even grant the staff from other courses limited reciprocal privileges.

I found out a little bit more... the reasoning anyway.

It's a city owned and operated course, their theory is that the staff are city employees, and if they let them play for free, they have to let every city staff member play for free.

Yeah that is weird.

I volunteer at a golf course here in central Texas once a week, and we get to play for free here. We arent allowed to play when we are working though.

and this is a muni? holy cow... i work at a course just because they let me play anytime i wanted as long as im not messing with paying members teetimes... and they let me play as much as i want for free as long as it isnt booked solid... i even get cost at the pro shop for gear... if they ever screwed with that... id be gone... there are plenty of other courses that give free play... even if they pay minimum wage or not at all... its well worth it

I work at a course for that very reason.. When i applied last summer it was free golf at any city of aurora course if you did not have a tee time. so no matter what course i played, if i walked up as a single to play i could do so for free. If i made a tee time, i got a little card stamped that had 30 or so free rounds on it. A fantastic deal. We also get free range balls at whatever course we go too, up to 5 a day.

This year, the bosses decided that we would need a change, so they come up with this. you can get free golf, but only at the course you work at, and only after 1 PM. So if i show up at 10, i either have to pay, or wait until 1 so i can punch a card. This card this time around has a total of 27 hole punches. Not a whole lot, but i guess its better than nothing. However, if i want to go out to play at a different course, there is never free golf.. So my $14 round today that would normally have been free, cost me 10, since the guy in the pro shop said this was all total BS and gave me a discount. However, we still get free range balls.

The reasoning was that if you just started working this year, this would seem like a pretty good deal.. but for thsoe of us who worked last year, this is nothing.

But its pretty crazy to not let them play at all.. I can see while you are working that you cant be out on the range or putting around..But even after your shift (assuming you change out of your uniform that is) i dont see a single problem with it..

With that reasoning are city owned courses closed on holidays? I'm sure that other city employees get off on holidays and I'm also sure that the employees of the GC don't so that shoots that line of thinking down.

I've told him to look elsewhere, the season hasn't even started yet, and there's tons of golf courses around... He shouldn't have too much trouble finding a good club.

I work at a parks and rec managed muni (not city owned) as a starter and I don't get free golf, but I do get cheap golf, along with free range balls, free lessons from the head pro, great discounts for stuff I buy through the pro shop, and the course does set up some fee swaps in the fall giving us a chance to play at some pretty nice courses for free. All of the district employees get the golf fee discounts, but they don't get the fee swap deals.

I can assure you that if there weren't any perks, I would be there for long at $7.50 an hour.

I worked for a tennis camp this past summer. Technically, I was not a camp employee, but an employee of the University and paid by the University. I got some free swag for working with the camp. Every University employee didn't get free swag... nor did they expect to.

That argument is full of holes. Sucks for your friend. EDIT: The more I think about this kind of thing the more annoyed I get. This the last thing I'll type up (though I've already gone through several counters in my head......): Using they're reasoning... I'm going to have to assume that every city employee earns the same wage regardless of the PLACE of work. And that all city employees receive the same benefits? Tell him to write a letter to the mayor. EDIT: OK... this is the last on. Seriously. When one city employee brings his/her favorite snack to work he can't eat it unless he has enough to share with every city employee? (I admit it's a stretch of an argument.... but I always hated being told that by teachers in elementary school. :P)

Yep, the workers can't play for free at my municipal course either.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
