He has the mental toughness to quite smoking and win majors. He won me some $ today (Saturday afternoon, a buddy of mine took K. Perry and T. Woods vs the field---I obviously took the field and said "Angel is a proven champion, I've got a good feeling") He gave me 2:1 odds
Thanks Angel, I like your style.

Great to see a quick player do well. Thoughts on his chances for a

To me, the British doesn't really suit his game. He hits the ball so high and those winds can be treacherous.

After witnessing Perry's shot on 16, his bogies on 17 and 18, Cabrera's first two shots on the first playoff hole, I suppose one lesson we can take from this is to not give up, keep grinding it out and success may come our way: not a bad lesson in golf and in life. Congratulations Senor Cabrera!

I fully agree. I guess if there is a higher golf authority, they decided to give the Jacket to Angel after he decided to hit that ball through the forest.

Trying to pull that kind of shot in that situation... thats what I call 'having balls'. But also congrats and respect to Kenny. He showed true sportsmanship when Angel sank the putt on the first extra hole and in general during the last 4 holes. Great guy!

Another great win for El Pato - I really like the fact that a guy that came from virtually nothing can go out and beat a lot of pros that came up with a silver spoon in their mouths their entire lives. Outstanding job at hanging in there and getting the job done.

You are so right. And---he gave us all a lesson in handling pressure---which Chad Campbell, Kenny Perry, Phil, and Tiger all know, but failed to do:

He was asked a couple of questions at the press conference, and here were his responses: "I was nervous" "I was relaxed" So---he was nervous and relaxed at the same time? Yep. If you have been there, you know what he means. And it is not easy to achieve---even for the great ones. And the real keys are both in execution and good decision making. Here is the difference: Kenny Perry admits that he made the wrong decision on the chip shot at #17---result: bogey. He made the wrong decision by hitting a driver at #18---result: bogey. By making two bad decisions in a row, he threw away his chance to win the green jacket outright. Angel made good decisions, recovered when he had to---look at the first playoff hole. And was relaxed enough to make critical putts. BOTTOM LINE: he is a worthy Champion (two Majors on his resume prove that indisputably).

He hung in there for sure! I was really pulling for Kenny to win and I hate that he lost it on those mistakes, but I can think of many players that I would have hated to win it, so I am glad that a guy like Angel pulled it out.

congrats, Angel! He's a self-made master of his profession. Rare indeed, and awesome.

Thanks for the inspiration, Senor Cabrera.

BOTTOM LINE: he is a worthy Champion (two Majors on his resume prove that indisputably).

John Daly? Andy North? I don't think it proves it indisputably.

Angel is neither of those people, of course, but I'm just saying two != indisputable. It's more than that.

VIVA LA PATO!

and im lol'ing with all the passive/aggressive racism assioated with this win. I was at a in clubhouse bar the durning the playoff and everyone in the room just had this look of disgust on their faces when el pato knocked in his par putt. I laughed so hard in the parking lot.

You are right, but it does put him "ahead of the class" that has only one Major: Jim Furyk, Tom Kite, Lanny Wadkins, Davis Love III, Freddie Couples, Craig Stadler, etc. (all of whom I respect and like). It puts him with Greg Norman (two British Opens with many, many near misses in other Majors), Curtis Strange, and Fuzzie, I believe (one US Open and 1 Masters). To be a Champion, you have to act like one (scratch John Daly there), and win other tournaments. A player like Angel is not going to win 8 or 9 tournaments a year with all his travel and the tough competition here and in Europe, but he will do OK. With his poor young life and the hard work to get where he is, he is truly a remarkable story in today's day and age, where many golfers come from middle class or upper class families, go to college on golf scholarships, get sent to all the expensive golf schools, and then have great amateur careers. Angel is a throwback to the people like Seve, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Gary Player, Larry Nelson, Lee Trevino, Chi Chi, etc. In other words, they all "came up the hard way".

Cabrera has also won the BMW Championship and has a top 4 finish at the British Open, the guy is no fluke.

Cabrera has also won the BMW Championship and has a top 4 finish at the British Open, the guy is no fluke. The man is a champion, saying other wise is jealously, bitterness, or both.

I found it sort of ironic that someone named "Angel" won on an Easter Sunday. Great tourney, great performance by Cabrera, a huge show of class by Kenny Perry, and a typical show of anti-class by Garcia, the "anti-Perry". This one was fun!

Would have loved to see Perry get it but I'm happy for fellow gray hair Cabrera. Gives all those other golfers a bit of hope. Come to think of it, the gray hair crowd have been in the spotlight a good deal recently, Mediate, Norman, Cabrera, Perry, to name a few.

And Freddie Couples, although he did miss the cut at Augusta. Since I will be 61 years old in July, I love to root for the old guys and the old gals on the LPGA Tour (like Juli Inkster, Pat Hurst, Helen Alfredsson, etc.).
