I could have piggy backed on the many Adams 3 pack threads ive found.

Sorry bout that.

Misplaced my PW on the course two weeks ago. Picked up someone else's. Returned it to the pro shop with my name and phone number attached to it.

But damn do i miss that club.
So my question. If i buy the 3 pack (Gap, Lob, Sand). Can the gap wedge replace my PW?

It was a Ping G5 by the way. 46 degree. I would use it from 100 yards out to just off the green. Practice a ton of short game recently and have gotten much better.
The gap is 52.

Will i see a huge difference?

I quite honestly don't know anybody who didnt get their club back after they left it on the course. I dont want to stereotype, but I would put a days greens fees that the golf population has more integrity than the general populace. Keep checking back with the course. For a few more days anyway.

I'll leave the technical stuff to the mush more informed, but it's interesting to see how the gap wedge evolved. Somebody correct me if this sounds wrong, and please don't take it as judging or pontificating.

The PW used to be the 52* but manufacturers crept it down to more like a 9 iron loft to get people excited about the distance off their wedges leaving a void between the PW and SW (can't deloft a sand wedge much), thusly the gap/approach/attack wedge is born. Another side effect is that the irons also got delofted. I wonder if I would be able to actually hit a 1960s 4 iron instead of cutting the ball in half like I do with my 2008 model.

Oh ive thought about buying a G5 PW, not the easiest thing to find btw. And i know the next day that guy is going to return mine.

He was pretty good. So i assume he plays at least once in a two week time frame.
Im going to drive by tomorrow again to make sure his is still there waiting.

But im leaning towards buying the 3 pack anyway? I could use a new/better sand wedge. I paid 10 bucks new for the one i use now.

there is a place to buy a single g5 pw...but like you said it is pricey

ironfinders.com - i would give you a direct link to the g5 page but the site doesnt work that way. it's not hard to find anyway

i would reccomend replacing the pw one way or another. going from a 45ish degree 9 iron to a 52 is just too big of a gap IMO.

you could also buy a 48 degree vokey...they come in 48 in SM and 200 series

Your pro shop, or any nearby authorized Ping retailer, can order individual clubs. Maybe not the G5, but having a G10 PW instead isn't the worst thing in the world. I believe they're the same loft.

A gap wedge won't replace it. But the Adams 3-pack, if you need a GW and a new SW, would be a good purchase. I haven't used them, but I've heard good things. The GW from the set won't replace your PW due to the loft difference. It's like losing your 8-iron and adding a 9-iron in its place.

So my question. If i buy the 3 pack (Gap, Lob, Sand). Can the gap wedge replace my PW?

The gap won't go as far as the PW, there is a 6 degree loft difference. Titleist and Cleveland make 46 and 48 degree wedges, and many pros and better amateurs use custom wedges like these rather than the PW that comes with their set. I would recommend looking into one of those to replace your PW.

good point jorruss... a gap wedge will travel 15-20 yards shorter than a pitching wedge.... ironfinder.com usually has single clubs, but again kind of pricey, If you found one of those old PureSpin wedges that say Gap on them they are a 48 degree wedge so in that case yes... But the Adams pack is 52, 56, 60 if I'm not mistaken... you could get the gap bent to 50 degrees but thats about as low as u can go with it...

I would recommend ironfinder.com if u can spare the extra couple bucks... did u get ur G5's from Ping directly might I ask? it may make a difference..

go to your local golf shop and see if they have a comparable PW in their used single irons. I was in the same boat for awhile and could never get my gap wedge to stretch that far and the 3/4 9i shot didn' thave the same effect as a full PW shot, soooo, I bought a 46deg CG14. works great.

There is a company that sells individual irons. Clubfinder.com I lost my pitching wedge to my old set and bought a new one for about 60 dollars. Also, always ebay. I bet you can get the exact one that goes with your set.

Get this.

I went to play at another local course yesterday. Alone. The starter said your up next with those three guys. I walk over and two of them are who i played with when i lost my PW. One had my PW at home. Is going to the other course to get his SW and return my PW on Monday. Funny to play with same group, at two different places. Cool guys. Cops. About the same skill level.

But i went out today and bought a 54* Vokey. Went immeditaly to the course to practice. I was pretty on target around the green. Short Game master here i come.

46* is not the same as 52*, in fact that's a larger gap than I'd ever like to have in between my scoring clubs. You 9 iron is probably around 42* right? That leaves a 10* gap in one of the most important parts of your set. I'd say go for that adams 3 pack but you need to find yourself another pw, just even for full shot sake. Plenty of wedge designs sell pw's that don't need to be in a set, like vokeys or such. I'd suggest a 48* so it transitions into that 3 wedge set you're looking at

    • Day 7: got out my chipping net and worked on chipping in the living room for a solid 15 minutes. Worked on mostly low shots, but mixed in a couple of high shots as well.
    • Day 228 4-4 More hip/chest turn and wrist arching. Working on hinging wrist a bit later. Foam balls.
    • Day 27 (4 Apr 26) - Worked with grandson on basic pitches/punches in the back yard with varied irons/wedges.  Wrapped up the day rolling some putts on the 30’ carpet I can set up in the yard to give varied terrain - and this carpet rolls almost too easy. A great way to figure a read and know that pace has to be near perfect to get in the hole.
    • A bit of a struggle today.  Just some thoughts/musings.  For the backswing, it is like I am never going to be moving on from this. I don't know if I can ever get to the point where the backswing isn't like over 1.5 seconds in duration. Which is probably not ideal. I would like to get to the point where I can just fling the arms back and up.  I have to feel like my hands are going to hit my right thigh from P1 to P2. If not then they like to move 2-5 inches towards the ball from P1 to P2. Then it's just bad from there. This feeling is my hands not gaining much depth, just maintaining depth from set up. From the DTL view, the hands head towards the camera.  While I am doing that, hinge the crap out of the club with my wrist only. Hinge in a way that the club is pointing at the camera at P2.  From P2, lift the hands straight up. I can get here, and still roll the club inside and get it way too shallow.  With the downswing. There isn't much here. I still can't get the flow of this or the sequencing of this to line up. It doesn't help that hinging from P1 to P2 just throws off my entire timing as well.
    • Day 550 - 2026-04-04 Practiced in the sim at a club for awhile. Did a SW ladder and practiced for awhile with my 7I.
